Re: Online versus on computer - Family Tree Maker software ...

?Sorry that this got off topic.

If you plan on using both online and desktop based genealogy software, be aware that YOU WILL loose data. I know of only one case where you can not loose data and that is where you you the EXACT SAME PROGRAM both online and on your desktop.?

I don?t know if you are sorry that you got this off topic or I got it off topic, but my feeling is that it is not off topic from the original post by tlcrogers

The original post questioned whether it was worth having FTM on their computer or continuing to keep it on line

My post and your two posts [and other posts] basically discuss the ramifications of the subject, especially the ramifications of keeping them both and then synching them.

And your statement: ?If you plan on using both online and desktop based genealogy software, be aware that YOU WILL loose data. I know of only one case where you can not loose data and that is where you you the EXACT SAME PROGRAM both online and on your desktop? sums it up

And in this case FTM and the online system ARE NOT THE EXACT SAME PROGRAM and so you can lose data.

And my feeling is they will NEVER be the same program. FTM is much more robust than the online system and if the online system was made to be exactly the same/have the same robustness as FTM then synching would be ?simple?, BUT, AND IT IS A BIG BUT, THEN THE ONLINE SYSTEM WOULD SUFFER FROM THE SAME SLOWNESS AS THE FTM VERSION AND SINCE IT WOULD BE ONLINE, AND IN ORDER TO KEEP THEIR CUSTOMERS HAPPY, THEY WOULD HAVE TO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SERVERS.

So, my guess is that they will continue to tweak the synching and clean up some of the data mapping, but they will never make the online system as ROBUST as the FTM version [and this gets exactly to the original post by tlcrogers]
