According to the New York State Labor Department, New York City lost nearly 30,000 jobs in November because of Hurricane Sandy. Many of those jobs were in the restaurant industry. James Brown, an economist for the Labor Department, tells City Room: "Restaurant closings and layoffs were widespread in impacted neighborhoods, and the relocation of workers from damaged downtown office buildings is hurting holiday catering and corporate cafeterias." All told, the "leisure and hospitality sector" lost about 8,500 jobs because of the storm.
