(AP) ? Fifty years ago, a group of 106 influential cultural and civic leaders from Atlanta traveled to Europe to visit famous museums and demonstrate the ascendant southern city's commitment to culture.

The Atlanta area's population in 1962 had recently hit a million people, but political and business leaders worried the growth wouldn't continue if the city didn't improve its museums and venues for theater and music. The city's cultural development would be altered forever by the trip, but in ways that had to do more with its tragic end.

The group was on its way home June 3 when its chartered Air France plane crashed on takeoff at Orly Field in Paris, killing all but two flight attendants. It had been the worst single plane crash to date.

"The community was just in shock," said Joe Bankoff, outgoing president and CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta. "I mean, to lose over 100 people in a moment was just unbelievable. But to lose such a cross section of Atlanta was particularly important."

On the flight were artists, company leaders, the first woman elected to the city's school board and other leaders. Among the sites on their packed agenda were the Louvre in Paris, the Coliseum in Rome and London Bridge.

Out of the city's grief grew a sense that something needed to be done to memorialize them, to improve on its tiny art museum in an old house and struggling art school.

"These people were heads of companies in Atlanta. They were the wives who did a lot of the volunteer work at the art association," said Susan Lowance, who had traveled with the group but had decided to stay in Europe longer to visit friends.

She believes the development of the arts center is a fitting tribute to her friends.

"These were people who had a stake in what was going to happen, and what happened was wonderful," Lowance said.

Atlanta is now home to a world-class art museum that has collaborated with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre, a Grammy-winning symphony orchestra and other top-notch cultural institutions.

Several business leaders led the efforts to create a permanent home for the arts. They wanted to honor the dead, but also shared the belief that to attract big business they needed to have big arts.

"It was about doing something that would put Atlanta on the map, and that vision was driven really by people who were not themselves passionate about the arts," said Bankoff, whose last day as head of the arts center was Thursday.

The idea was to create a single entity that would house all major art forms. It led to the establishment of Atlanta Arts Alliance and the Memorial Arts Center ? now named the Woodruff Arts Center, after former Coca-Cola president and major donor Robert Woodruff.

The groundbreaking for the Memorial Arts Center was held on June 3, 1966, the fourth anniversary of the crash. It took about two years to complete with a final price tag of more than $13 million, according to "Explosion At Orly," a book by historian Ann Abrams.

When the center opened in October 1968, the French ambassador to the United States presented to the city a casting of sculptor Auguste Rodin's "The Shade." Today it sits on the grounds of the High Museum of Art in a memorial ringed by polished stone etched with the names of those who died in the Orly crash.

The center has grown over the years to include the Richard Meier-designed High, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Alliance Theatre, the 14th Street Playhouse and the Atlanta College of Art.

Speculating on what the Atlanta arts footprint would look like today if the crash had never happened, both Abrams and Bankoff said they believe the city was destined to grow into a major arts center.

"Frankly, it would have happened anyway, but it might have taken a little longer, and it might have taken a few different turns," Abrams said.

The different artistic entities would likely have been scattered instead of winding up on a single campus in Midtown Atlanta, Bankoff said. The visual and performing arts were grouped under combined management, which may have accelerated their development and strength.

While Atlanta's profile in arts bloomed, the families of the crash victims put their lives back together.

Penny Hart was a 19-year-old college sophomore studying at the Sorbonne in Paris when her mother, Henrietta Collier Armstrong Ayer, came over on the trip. They ate dinner together the night before the crash.

"It was just a wonderful, happy occasion all the way around," Hart said.

Hart's stepfather booked her a flight to Atlanta the day after the crash. She stayed for several weeks and returned to Paris to finish her studies after her mother's funeral. After graduation, she abandoned her plans to go to graduate school for clinical psychology and decided she wanted to keep traveling. She became a flight attendant for Pan American World Airlines for several years.

"There was no one to stop me, and my mother would have stopped me. It just wouldn't have fit in with her image of things," Hart said. "I had a great deal of freedom, I guess. But it's also very strange to have no support if you need it."

She eventually returned to Atlanta. Her involvement in the memorial project was limited until decades later when she helped the center locate surviving relatives of the victims.

"Most of them were so thrilled to have been found because they hadn't had anybody to talk to about this very much and certainly not for a long time," she said. "In those days, you didn't wallow in your troubles publicly ever. You got right back up and dusted yourself off and got moving again."

Also killed were Tom Little Sr., an architect who restored 18th-century buildings, and his wife, Charlotte, who decorated the interiors with period furnishings. Their son, Tom, was 12 and was being cared for by an aunt while his parents were in Europe. He remembers watching cartoons in his parents' bedroom when the phone rang. He answered at the same time that his aunt picked up the extension in the kitchen and listened as another aunt sobbed that the plane had crashed.

Little remembers sharing stories with other family members of victims at the 40th anniversary of the crash. In his home, a photo of his parents taken just before they left for Europe sits on a shelf, and framed pencil drawings by his father hang on the walls. He said even he and his older sister had rarely spoken about the crash.

The Woodruff Arts Center and other organizations have planned events to mark the date, and Bankoff said the 50th anniversary provides "a moment to stop and reflect not just on the loss, but on 50 years of continuous support for arts and culture in the community as an important sign of what this community values."

"I'm glad that we have these anniversaries," Little said, "because I like to think that my parents' legacy will last forever."

From An Israeli Kibbutz, A High-Priced Caviar Prized By Top Chefs

A kibbutz in the mountains of northern Israel might seem an unlikely source for some of the world's most expensive gourmet food. But a small farming collective has built itself a lucrative business, supplying some of America's top chefs with caviar that customers pay hundreds of dollars to sample.

Caviar ? an expensive delicacy that's not much to look at.

At Galilee Caviar in Kibbutz Dan, Israel, there are pools of sturgeon everywhere you look. The massive fish aren't much to look at ? they look like a cross between a seal and a catfish. But they demand a high price ? about $2,500 each, says Yigal Ben Tzvi, the owner of the company.

And each fish is a 10 to 15 year investment, he says. When we visited, it was the day Ben Tzvi began hauling these monsters out of their ponds and checking them for the quality of the caviar inside.

?

The fish are carefully cultivated and the females selected for osetra caviar production. The whole thing has the air of a hospital operation. The fish are reeled in by net, and then anesthetized in smaller tanks. Biologist Avshalom Hurvitz sits at a small white table, gingerly pulling back tissue with a scalpel to show us what's inside.

"These are the eggs, and they are three milimeters in diameter. They have a pale gray color, which is nice. I see no fat tissue here. It means that the yield of caviar will be high," Huvitz says.

As Huvitz pronounces the caviar Grade A, Ben Tzvi smiles. He's proud of the fact that chefs like Eric Ripert serve his caviar exclusively in their restaurants. Ben Tzvi says his caviar is superior because of the mountain spring water in the ponds and the purebred nature of his fish.

"The price in New York, somebody calculated, is $9,400 per kilo," Ben Tzvi says. (Gourmet shop Dean & DeLuca sells 8.8 oz. of the stuff online to the rest of us for just under a cool $1,000.)

Ben Tzvi says he never set out to become a purveyor of caviar. Kibbutz Dan was at the forefront of fish farming in the early 1980s, and 1990s. The caviar business is a subsidiary of Dan Fish Farms. But as the kibbutz shifted from its socialist structure to a privatized model, Ben Tzvi and others explored new business opportunities.

At first, they tried half a dozen fish before settling on sturgeon, imported from Russia as fertilized eggs. "For the first 10 years we grew them for meat, cause no one thought of caviar at that time," Ben Tzvi says.

Historically, the world's best caviar came from Russia and Iran. But overfishing of sturgeon in the Caspian and Black Seas has brought the fish to the brink of extinction, and severe quotas cap the legal sale of caviar from those countries now.

caviar from the kibbutz

Dean & Deluca

By the early 2000s, world caviar prices were rising sharply and international authorities tried to crackdown on fraud by implementing a labeling system.

Ben Tzvi decided to give farmed caviar a try. A few years later, when he started selling his product, the price doubled. Then it tripled. Now 99 percent of the world's caviar now comes from fish farms like Ben Tzvi's.

But even though it's a high-priced specialty, caviar is an acquired taste. It's salty, fishy, and a bit squishy in the mouth ? and that describes the good kinds.

Galilee Caviar's marketing director, Smadar Ashkenazi, acknowledges that a lot of the caviar market is about branding and perception. She stands in the company's walk-in freezer with an open eight-ounce tin of caviar in front of her. There are about six different locks on the freezer door, Ashkenazi jokes its guarded like a bank vault.

"In general, I think caviar is more about the experience of eating caviar, so its about what it makes you feel. Unfortunately a lot of people they kinda fear what its going to be like," she says.

Ben Tzvi says that was him. But naturally, now he's hooked.

Analysis: Syria massacre pushes Moscow toward decision point

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin resumed the Russian presidency declaring a moral right to promote Kremlin power on the world stage. A massacre in Syria could now press him towards abandoning his closest Middle Eastern ally, but any backdown would have to be carefully engineered to protect Russian interests and save face.

International envoy Kofi Annan said the massacre of 108 people, half of them children, in the town of Houla showed Syria at a 'tipping point'. He urged President Bashar al-Assad to halt the killing that the West blames squarely on his troops.

"I think there may be changes in Russia's position, because Russia has lost its ability to manage the situation," said Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of the journal Russia in Global Affairs and a foreign policy expert with Kremlin connections.

With Western and Arab League pressure on both Syria and Russia after the Houla killings, he said, a Russian shift "is more likely than before - but there is no decision yet."

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking after talks with British foreign minister William Hague, blamed both sides, government and rebels, for the Houla massacre; but he appeared to move a degree towards Western and Arab League positions in acknowledging Assad bears overall responsibility for security.

Putin flies to Berlin and Paris this week for talks he had hoped would be led by economic projects to modernize Russian industry. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande may have other ideas.

"He did not want to talk about Syria, where Russian influence is overestimated," said German political scientist Alexander Rahr. "If the West decides Putin is defending Assad, that will spoil his chances to develop partnership with Germany and France, which are very important for him."

Russia has helped Assad play for time through more than a year of bloodshed in which the United Nations says government forces have killed more than 9,000 civilians. The government says thousands of police have been killed by 'terrorists'.

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters nobody had "unambiguous information" about Houla. "One should not give in to emotion at such an important moment."

"Russia is a country with a consistent foreign policy and pressure is hardly appropriate."

HOMS

With China, Russia vetoed two Western-backed Security Council resolutions condemning the government, including one in February that backed an Arab League call for Assad to cede power.

The context of that veto might suggest a Russia inured to such atrocities or at least strongly wedded to the idea that Assad's forces were no more to blame than 'terrorist' rebels for the violence. The vote came shortly after hundreds of people were reported killed by government shelling of the city of Homs.

Houla, however, is arguably different.

The massacre took place with United Nations monitors present in the country. Details emerged quickly and in graphic form. The U.N. said whole families had been shot dead in their homes while houses suffered intense artillery bombardment.

Photographs of the bodies of children appeared on the front pages of newspapers across the Western world. In Russia, the coverage of the massacre was less prominent.

Wednesday's Komsomolskaya Pravda, a mass circulation newspaper that has been used to shape public opinion, carried a picture of a blue-helmeted UN observer and a line of bodies wrapped in sheets, the head and chest of one boy visible.

"The West has begun war in Syria with the Belgrade bombing scenario", the headline read, in reference to the 1999 NATO bombing of Belgrade intended to stop Serbian action against the breakaway province of Kosovo.

The story suggested the West was using the Houla massacre as a pretext for military intervention in Syria. Kommersant and Izvestia newspapers, however, allowed that Russia was now under stronger pressure to change its stance.

The diplomatic pressure to help press Assad to go, or to engineer his exit, could move Moscow from its policy of awaiting an ebbing of the violence.

"I think we're beyond this point now, we've passed this point with the massacre," said Vladimir Frolov, a Kremlin-connected foreign policy expert and president of LEFF Group, a Moscow-based government relations firm.

Moscow has stepped up criticism of Assad and courted his opponents, suggesting it is hedging its bets and hopes to preserve influence in Syria if he is forced out.

The Kremlin, however, does not want to lose its firmest foothold in the Middle East - a client for billions of dollars' worth of weapons and the host of Russia's only warm-water naval port outside the former Soviet Union.

Nor does it want to look weak, having paid the price for weakness in the immediate aftermath of the disintegration of the Soviet Union when it surrendered one foothold after another from eastern Europe to the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.

Putin, flanked by military commanders, set out his vision of a powerful Russia during World War Two Victory Day celebrations this month, two days after resuming the presidency.

"Russia consistently follows a policy of strengthening global security and we have a great moral right to stand up determinedly for our positions because our country suffered the blow of Nazism," he declared, flanked by his military commanders in front of the redbrick walls of the Kremlin.

He said the lessons of the war remain valid and that "respect for state sovereignty" is a crucial guarantee it will not be repeated - a warning against Western efforts to promote "regime change".

CONTROLLED DEMOLITION

Russian sensitivities run deep and suspicions of a Western-led diplomatic 'ambush' will be hard to overcome.

Putin made clear he was incensed when NATO, given the green light for air operations in Libya last year when Russia refrained from vetoing Security Council authorization, helped rebels oust longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Since enraging the West with its Syria veto in February, Russia has strongly backed U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan, which is acceptable to Moscow because it includes no direct call for Assad to leave power.

Russia has long contended that it supports the peace plan, not Assad, and would accept a political transition as long as it is a product of an internal Syrian political process free of conditions dictated from outside.

Meanwhile, analysts say, Russia is watching Syria closely, trying to determine whether Assad can hold onto power and worrying there may be a point when helping him stay there is not worth the sacrifice of global prestige.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Barack Obama told G8 leaders including Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that Assad must leave power and pointed to Yemen as a model of how political transition could work in Syria.

In Yemen, Frolov said, Saudi Arabia "pressured both the opposition and the government to agree on a formula for the political transition.

"I think that's what Moscow is trying to achieve in Syria, but I'm afraid Assad is denying Moscow this opportunity," he said.

Georgy Mirsky, of Moscow's Institute of World Economy and International Relations, said the evidence forced Russia to acknowledge government involvement in the Houla massacre, but that it is far from giving up on Assad.

"It would be a mistake to see ... a signal that Russia is beginning to distance itself from Assad, because Assad has not lost the war yet," he said.

But whether or not Russia is amenable, the limits of its sway over Syria could be the biggest hurdle to a deal for Assad's removal. Russia does not have the same influence in Syria that Saudi Arabia used to force Yemen's president to go. Yemen relies on Saudi Arabia for billions of dollars of aid.

"Russia cannot tell Assad to get out. Even if we did, it does not mean that he would - we're not in that type of relationship," Frolov said. "Russia can give him advice and nudge him to do this, but ultimately he makes his own decisions."

There are plenty of other obstacles to make Moscow wary of backing such an arrangement.

"There is a lot of talk about the Yemeni scenario. It won't work - it's a non-starter, because in Yemen there was a horrible split within the governing elite - nothing of this kind has been happening so far in Damascus."

Syria's governing elite "is well aware that as soon as Assad goes, it will mean the beginning of the end for the whole elite - the whole bloody building will come crashing down," he said.

Russia may take some persuading it could salvage more from the chaos of an Assad exit than the continued stalemate which keeps Russia's base open and its commerce, including arms trade, active. More Houlas could follow. Moscow could consider the potential loss to its international image ultimately too great.

Putin could be lured by the prospect of a controlled demolition, a peaceful exit by Assad, carefully orchestrated, that can be presented as the work of the Syrian people alone, with perhaps the final solicitations of Moscow.

"Many in Russia understand that Assad has no political future," Lukyanov said. "If Russia can help him not be overthrown but leave smoothly, this can certainly be sold as a success."

Panel Delivers Diverse Perspectives on Leadership Team Building ...

By all accounts, TiEcon 2012, was a success, with more than 3,000 people gathering to discuss a variety of topics on entrepreneurship and business startups.

Riviera Partners? Kevin Buckby served as a panelist for ?Building Winning Leadership Teams?Critical to Success of Startups?, which drew nearly 400 attendees. He was joined on the panel by executives from RiseSmart, Franklin Templeton, Jobite, Mozilla, and Cetas.

?The panel solicited intriguing questions and lively discussion on what it takes to put a strong leadership team in place, both from a hiring and execution standpoint,? Kevin said. ?Attendees were also interested in how to effectively integrate executive recruits into the business and get them to work together as a unified team.?

One question that generated diverse perspectives from the panelists was ?Should we hire for today, or for tomorrow?? That is, do you focus on individuals who can help achieve your company?s immediate goals and objectives, or executives who can scale over time to deliver a long-range strategy?

?While there were differing opinions among panelists, there was consensus that you must balance today?s needs with tomorrow?s challenges and opportunities,? Kevin said.
Another interesting topic that arose during the panel was around organizational culture, and whether companies should bring in folks to build a new culture, or hire people who fit into?and can help grow?an existing culture.

?Overall it was a quality session with insightful takeaways for the audience,? Kevin said. ?I?m?privileged?to have participated with a talented group of panelists and shared my perspectives on what it takes to build a winning leadership team.?

Amazon offers prepaid 4G LTE data in Japan, gets you online 500MB at a time

Image

Amazon has decided that offering 3G-capable Kindles isn't enough of an involvement in the cellular world -- it's now getting into the business of offering the bits themselves. Through a tie-up with NTT DoCoMo-using MVNO Japan Communications, Amazon is selling prepaid SIM cards for LTE data. Each slice of plastic and circuitry will provide a 500MB block of sweet, sweet 4G for ¥1,980 ($25). There's a very good chance we'd burn through that in a day, but it'll let you get an NTT DoCoMo-ready smartphone or Arrows Tab online in a pinch. The Japanese can snap up the cards later in the month, while those of us in the US will just have to hope that Amazon can make a similar (if hopefully cheaper) deal closer to home.

Next-gen iPhone expected to sport 16:9 display aspect ratio

The next-generation iPhone?supposedly packing a 4-inch screen, up from 3.5 inches?is now expected to sport a resolution of 640x1136, according to 9to5Mac. In fact, the site claims to have information on multiple next-gen iPhones, though not all of them may see the light of day.

The two prototypes in question are reportedly codenamed N41AP (iPhone 5,1) and N42AP (iPhone 5,2), and both phones have a display that measures 3.95 inches diagonally. (This seems to once again corroborate previous rumors about a 4-inch iPhone?one that Steve Jobs supposedly "worked closely" on before his death in October of 2011.) As some have suspected, 9to5Mac claims the larger-sized screen won't make the device any wider than it already is. Instead, the display will grow in length, from the current resolution of 640x960 to 640x1136. That would leave the display 1.94 inches wide while lengthening it to 3.45 inches, shifting the aspect ratio from the old 3:2 to 16:9.

There has been some debate as to whether iOS developers would welcome 16:9 displays. Reports circulated Monday claiming that some devs were excited about the change, but the ones we spoke to expressed caution about screen ratios changing. Would Apple want every single app in the App Store updated for a 16:9 screen, and would developers have to continue supporting 3:2 apps for older iPhones? Several developers pointed out that apps are already supposed to be able to handle display resolution changes, but some have issues dealing with things at the top of the screen (such as the Personal Hotspot bar), so there is potential for complications. How do you think Apple will handle it, assuming the rumor is true?

Bats: On the Ground Floor With Team Israel

The special assistant to the San Diego Padres? general manager fell asleep watching a game on his iPad last weekend. ?Extra innings,? Brad Ausmus, the special assistant, said, but he actually had a better excuse. He was watching the game in Israel.

Ausmus, who played 18 major league seasons as a catcher for four teams, is the manager for Israel?s inaugural entry in the World Baseball Classic. He spent last week touring Israel and scouting prospects and youth leagues, and on Thursday presented a jersey to President Shimon Peres.

?It?s a great life experience for him,? Padres Manager Bud Black said. ?There?s no doubt Brad wants to stay in the game. Some players would rather go into broadcasting; some players would rather go into the front office or amateur scouting. My instinct tells me Brad wants to get in uniform as either a bench coach or manager at some point.?

For Ausmus, 43, managing Team Israel is a start. Raised in Connecticut by a Jewish mother and a Protestant father, Ausmus did not go to church or synagogue as a boy but his family displayed a Christmas tree and a menorah. He said he felt most connected to his heritage through playing in the majors.

?There?s so much Jewish-American generational love of baseball that I saw,? Ausmus said. ?Boys or even grown men would come up and tell me I was their favorite player.?

These days, Milwaukee?s Ryan Braun, Texas? Ian Kinsler and Boston?s Kevin Youkilis are Jewish major league stars. Other Jewish major leaguers include Arizona?s Craig Breslow, the Mets? Ike Davis and Texas? Scott Feldman. Israel?s team will include native Israelis, but Ausmus said he also hoped to attract as many major leaguers as possible.

Israel grants citizenship to anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent, so all of those players would be eligible to play for Israel in the Classic. Ausmus said he had a comprehensive list of Jewish players in professional baseball and had reached out to them directly or through their agents.

A problem could be timing. Israel will play in a qualifying round with France, South Africa and Spain in Florida, but Ausmus said he did not know if it would take place in September or November. That makes a big difference because only minor leaguers could participate in September. The actual tournament takes place during spring training next year.

Braun and Youkilis played for the United States in the last Classic, in 2009. Davis said he would be more interested in playing for the United States, although he did not dismiss the idea of Israel?s team.

?I?ve played for a lot of U.S.A. teams already, and my goal would be to play for the highest U.S.A. team,? Davis said.

Ausmus knows at least two players who will be on his roster: the recently retired outfielders Shawn Green and Gabe Kapler have agreed to serve as player-coaches, and the former pitcher Scott Schoeneweis has shown interest in playing or coaching. Andrew Lorraine, another former major league pitcher, is the team?s pitching coach.

Baseball is a niche sport in Israel, Ausmus said, but with a good showing in the Classic, he said he hoped it could grow. For now, he said, about 1,000 people play baseball in Israel, where most fields would not be adequate for American high school teams.

?We?re not starting from scratch because they had a professional league here in 2007,? Ausmus said. ?But I think with the W.B.C. coming up, the people involved with Israeli baseball saw an opportunity, if Team Israel does well, to not only promote their country, but to also promote baseball. This is hopefully helping that. You have to start somewhere.?

Male 'contraceptive gene' found

It may be possible to develop a new male contraceptive pill after researchers in Edinburgh identified a gene critical for the production of healthy sperm.

Experiments in mice found that the gene, Katnal1, was vital for the final stages of making sperm.

The authors of a study in PLos Genetics said a drug which interrupts Katnal1 could be a reversible contraceptive.

A fertility expert said there was "certainly a need" for such a drug.

Contraception in men is largely down to condoms or a vasectomy.

Infertility search

Researchers at the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh were investigating the causes of male infertility.

They randomly altered the genetic code of mice to see which became infertile. They then traced the mutations which led to infertility, which led them to Katnal1.

?Start Quote

If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive?

End Quote Dr Lee Smith University of Edinburgh

It contains the blueprints for a protein which is important in cells which support the development of sperm. Without the protein, sperm do not fully form and the body disposes of them.

Scientists hope they will be able to perform a similar trick in humans to stop sperm developing, without causing lasting damage.

One of the researchers Dr Lee Smith said: "If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive.

"The important thing is that the effects of such a drug would be reversible because Katnal1 only affects sperm cells in the later stages of development, so it would not hinder the early stages of sperm production and the overall ability to produce sperm.

He said it would be "relatively difficult" to do as the protein lives inside cells, however, he said there was "potential" to find something else that protein worked with, which might be an easier target.

'Holy Grail'

Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said there was "certainly a need" for a non-hormonal contraceptive for men and that this had been a "Holy Grail" of research for many years.

He added: "The key in developing a non-hormonal contraceptive for men is that the molecular target needs to be very specific for either sperm or other cells in the testicle which are involved in sperm production.

"If they are not, then such a contraceptive could have unwanted side effects on other cells and tissues in the body and may even be dangerous.

"The gene described by the research group in Edinburgh sounds like an exciting new possible target for a new male contraceptive, but it may also shed light on why some men are sub-fertile and why their sperm does not work properly."

Bodybuilding and Diet Supplements May Damage Your Liver ...

Researchers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) looked at data from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network, which evaluated patient information from eight sites across the US from 2003 to 2011.

Their findings disclosed that of 679 cases of liver injury, 93 (18 percent) were attributed to herbal or dietary supplements.

According to the results presented at the Digestive Disease Week meeting in San Diego, among patients who used supplements, 33 percent consumed bodybuilding products, 26 percent took weight loss goods, and the remaining 31 percent used a variety of other types of supplements.

?The number of cases in our network has increased over the years,? cautioned Dr. Jose Serrano of NIH. ?There were no deaths, but 7 percent of patients needed a liver transplant. These are not trivial consequences.?

About 40 percent of people in the US take herbal or dietary supplements. According to estimates, American consumers spent 26.7 billion dollars on supplements in 2009.

However, it seems that the people are less likely to be aware about those products? side effects such as hepatotoxicity or liver injuries.

Moreover, compared to medications, the highly marketed supplements are under much less strong regulation imposed by health authorities.

?There is so little regulation of the many products on the market,? said study leader Dr. Victor Navarro of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Experts suggest people to read the label?s of supplements carefully and consult with their physician before taking those products and do not assume that they are completely safe.
