Online Gaming Simulation | Accounting Policy

Welcome back from the break! I hope you had a great time.

Last week, of course, we did not schedule any sessions. Two weeks ago, though, we focused on our management accounting material involving Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

We defined this field in terms of two processes. One involves the Performance Outcomes Measurement (POM) process, which includes health care measurement instruments such as HEDIS and CAHPS. We weren?t able to discuss those instruments before the break, and so we?ll focus on them in class on Monday.

The other involves Social Impact Investing, which includes various measurements regarding triple bottom line reporting and sustainability accounting. After discussing the Robin Hood Foundation?s use of the measurement ?benefit to the poor per dollar of cost? for all organizations (remember the soup kitchen case), we spoke to Issam Chleuh, the founder of the Impact Investing Task Force at Ernst & Young, about their initiatives. We also noted how E&Y has modified the four risk categories of the Enterprise Risk Management cube by adding a fifth category for reputational risk.

This week, after discussing HEDIS and CAHPS on Monday, we will begin to focus on the Second Life online gaming simulation. We will also continue our progress with the Leaders on Leadership attestation exercise.

Before I address these upcoming activities on an itemized basis in this blog posting, though, please permit me to announce a new policy regarding the use of electronic devices in the classroom for purposes that are unrelated to class activities.

During the week prior to Spring Break, three different students were ?caught? using such devices in an inappropriate manner. After considering this outbreak of inappropriate behavior, I have decided to simply deduct three participation points (i.e. 3% of the course grade) from any student who is ?caught? engaging in this activity during the remainder of the semester.

Learning Modules

For our regularly scheduled Monday session, please review the ?What is HEDIS?? and ?About CAHPS? materials that were originally assigned for the Friday session prior to the break. We will conclude our discussion of management accounting and Corporate Social Responsibility by discussing this material on Monday.

For our regularly scheduled Wednesday session, to prepare for our Second Life gaming simulation, please read a web page entitled How Wheat Flour Is Milled. During class on Wednesday, we will visit our virtual flour mill in Second Life and discuss our upcoming flour mill game, which we have designed with the support of Bill Quigley, the CFO of the Bay State Milling Company.

On Thursday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, we have scheduled a special online Continuing Professional Education session with the Maryland Association of CPAs and North Carolina State University within Second Life. We will discuss the session in more detail in class on Monday and Wednesday; all students are expected to either attend the Thursday session ?live? or to attend an alternative session later this semester. Please don?t worry if you can?t attend this particular session; although you are welcome to do so, a ?make up? session will be scheduled soon!

Finally, for our regularly scheduled Friday session, we will continue our conversation regarding the Leaders on Leadership series. To prepare for this session, please read paragraphs .01 through .028 of the PCAOB?s Attestation Standard AT Section 301, Financial Forecasts and Projections.

Although soon we?ll need to begin to (slightly) increase the length of our brief exams, first let?s try to settle ourselves back into our normal campus routine this week. So, during each of the three course sessions this week, we?ll simply begin each class with our customary very brief exam that covers the material that we discussed in our previous class, as well as the reading assignment for the current class.

PwC Simulation

This Tuesday morning, I plan to speak to John Formica about the brief ?recommendation document? that each team will complete to conclude the Blue Frog exercise. I?ll discuss our conversation with the class on Wednesday.

Leaders on Leadership Series

First and foremost, in response to the student feedback for ?more guidance,? I?ve decided to delay the engagement letter deadline (i.e. the one established for Friday, March 23rd in my posting two weeks ago) until we?ve had a chance to discuss the Series in detail this Friday.

More than likely, the new deadline will be Monday, March 26th at 11:59 pm. I?ll either confirm it or change it after we ?see how it goes? in class on Friday.

All of the other deadlines for the series, though, remain in effect. And yes, that does indeed include the brief feedback email to be completed by each student within 24 hours of attending a session!

Second Life Learning Activity

On Wednesday, we?ll visit the virtual flour mill and discuss our simulation game. Bill Quigley, the CFO of Bay State Milling Company, will join us in the classroom at our regularly scheduled class times on Wednesday, April 4th.

McGladrey Learning Activity

We are now definitely confirmed for Thursday evening, May 3rd at McGladrey?s Boston offices! Please let me know via email by this Monday at 11:59 pm if you are concerned that you will not be able to arrive at their offices by 6:00 pm on that day. As we discussed, we will probably be able to arrange the timing of the team presentations to accommodate you, but I?ll need to know about your concerns as soon as possible!
