Police in Niagara County are investigating a burglary at the Pendleton Center United Methodist Church.
Pastor Tom Kraft says someone broke in sometime between Christmas night and Monday morning and stole all of the cash from the Christmas collections, estimated between $20,000 and $25,000.
The church staff usually deposits the weekend collection immediately following the service. But the staff was unable to do so on Saturday because it was Christmas Eve and banks were closed.
Kraft says the holiday collection is about two to three times the normal weekend offering at the church and was destined for mission causes.
The thief was apparently able to get through one locked door and then smashed in two other doors to get to the room where the money is kept. Police believe the suspect was familiar with the church and might have even had a key.
