Business owner admits insurance fraud ? Local News ? SalemNews ...

PEABODY ? A Swampscott man who ran a Peabody auto glass repair business admitted yesterday to filing nearly $30,000 worth of phony insurance claims for work he didn't do.

Robert Giller, 53, pleaded guilty in Salem Superior Court to a total of 40 counts, including 20 counts of filing false insurance claims, 18 counts of felony larceny and two counts of attempted larceny.

Judge David Lowy sentenced Giller to nine months of unsupervised probation and ordered that he pay a total of $37,188 in restitution ? something Giller's attorney, Tom Drechsler, said would be done by Tuesday.

Assistant Attorney General Brendan O'Shea, who had asked for a year of probation, told the judge that over the course of a three-year period between 2006 and 2009, Giller filed 20 claims with four insurance companies ? Safety Insurance, Electric Insurance, Fireman's Fund and Plymouth Rock Assurance ? for work he claimed was performed on cars at New England Glass Co.

That was one of two businesses in Peabody that Giller owned; the second business, Advanced Automotive Concepts, specialized in auto repairs and improvements, O'Shea told the judge.

Giller submitted claims totalling more than $28,000 on the policies of 14 different customers, including well-known former Peabody High football coach Ed Nizwantowski and his wife, Patty, claiming he had done more work on their vehicles than he actually did, according to the indictments. None of the customers is accused of any wrongdoing.

He also submitted claims under both his own and his wife's insurance policies, according to the indictments.

Nearly all were paid by the insurance companies ? until late 2009, when two of the insurance companies became suspicious of the claims.

The Insurance Fraud Bureau, an investigative agency that works with state prosecutors on such cases, began an investigation that led to Giller's indictment last year.

Drechsler said his client, a father of three, was a model citizen who coached Little League and had no run-ins with the law until the indictment.

He also said Giller and his wife are responsible for the "constant care" of a 22-year-old developmentally disabled son, whom they brought with them to court yesterday.

Drechsler suggested that Giller's plea also spared the state the expense of a lengthy trial.

Lowy said that while Giller was accepting responsibility and making full restitution, the case is more serious than it might appear.

"Everybody's insurance rates are impacted, and the integrity of the insurance system is jeopardized by acts like these," the judge said.

Police investigating burglary at Buffalo-area church

Posted at: 12/28/2011 4:14 AM

nullPolice in Niagara County are investigating a burglary at the Pendleton Center United Methodist Church.

Pastor Tom Kraft says someone broke in sometime between Christmas night and Monday morning and stole all of the cash from the Christmas collections, estimated between $20,000 and $25,000.

The church staff usually deposits the weekend collection immediately following the service. But the staff was unable to do so on Saturday because it was Christmas Eve and banks were closed.

Kraft says the holiday collection is about two to three times the normal weekend offering at the church and was destined for mission causes.

The thief was apparently able to get through one locked door and then smashed in two other doors to get to the room where the money is kept. Police believe the suspect was familiar with the church and might have even had a key.

Fearing split, pastors urge GOP candidates to quit

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement said Wednesday that an effort has been under way to persuade either Rick Santorum or Michele Bachmann to consider quitting the Republican presidential race and endorsing the other to avoid splintering this influential voting bloc's influence in the state's caucuses.

"Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister. He said he asked Santorum several weeks ago to consider exiting the race but has since endorsed the former Pennsylvania senator, who is rising in polls.

Rev. Albert Calloway, a retired pastor from Indianola, said he asked Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, several days ago to consider quitting the race.

A group of voters that united behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's winning caucus campaign in 2008 fear that this year's caucuses could be won by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. Neither track as closely to the religious right as Santorum, Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Santorum, long dismissed and short on campaign money, has diligently campaigned in Iowa for more than two years. A CNN poll of Iowa caucus-goers released Wednesday showed Santorum leaping into third place in Iowa, at 16 percentage points, behind Romney and Paul.

In recent weeks, Santorum has picked up the endorsements of key social conservatives, including former gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats, who led the successful effort last year to oust three Iowa Supreme Court judges who were part of the court's unanimous 2009 decision to allow gay marriage.

Bachmann too has rallied Iowa's influential conservative clergy. Many, like Jeff Mullen, pastor of one of the Des Moines area's mega churches, helped lead Bachmann's winning campaign for Iowa's Republican presidential straw poll last August. But since then, Bachmann has faded in polls, although Wednesday she planned to conclude an ambitious effort to campaign in all of Iowa's 99 counties.

The CNN poll showed Bachmann with support of 9 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers, up slightly from the last poll. Perry had 11 percent, also up slightly.

Bachmann told reporters on her campaign bus between stops in Iowa on Wednesday she wasn't quitting and planned to announce additional clergy who were supporting her candidacy.

"The pastors who have endorsed my campaign want to see me as the next president of the United States," Bachmann said.

Gordon, who helped lead the campaign against the judges, said the fear of a divided social conservative vote is widespread among the state's evangelical clergy. However, few have actually reached out to candidates, he said.

Brad Cranston, a pastor from Burlington, said he too is worried that social conservatives will split their vote and lose influence over the eventual GOP nominee, but he has not yet tried to contact any candidates.

"It's more and more obvious it needs to happen for either Bachmann or Santorum to move forward," said Cranston, who has endorsed Bachmann.

App-y Christmas: 242 Million Downloads Sets New Record [STUDY] (Mashable)

Apparently, a lot of people spent Christmas Day turning on their new smartphones and downloading apps. Assessing the data from the busiest day of the year for activations and app downloads, Flurry Analytics found consumers shattered records for both this year. Activations topped 6.8 million, a 140% jump over Christmas Day 2010's 2.8 million, according to Flurry. Consumers downloaded 242 million apps that day, an increase of 125% over last year. The day caps off a strong year for both iOS and Android. Apple's App Store, which exceeded 10 billion downloads overall in January, is on track to post 10 billion downloads for 2011 alone. The Android Market, meanwhile, surpassed 10 billion downloads overall this month.

[More from Mashable: Infinity Blade 2 Teases Big Update to Make App Go Social]

Unfortunately, Flurry doesn't break down Android downloads vs. iOS. "Frankly, they're neck and neck," says Peter Farago, vp of marketing for Flurry, who adds that the company chooses not to share that data with the public. Android's share of the smartphone market was 43.7% vs. 27.3% for iOS in August, according to comScore.

Flurry also tracked app downloads for all of Christmas Day and found a big increase around 9 a.m. and then another jump around 11 a.m. The amount stayed at that level until about midnight. (Time zones were "normallized" in the research, so 9 a.m. in London, New York and San Francisco were all considered 9 a.m.)

[More from Mashable: The 10 Best Android Games of 2011]

The "appy Christmas" is expected to continue. Flurry is predicting that between Christmas and New Year's Day, consumers will download 1 billion apps.

Nudie bars welcome oil workers to ND boom town

WILLISTON, N.D. - Dre Holder got a good vibe when he arrived in Williston in search of a high-paying oil job. The 25-year-old from San Diego stepped off the train in the North Dakota boom town and immediately saw two strip clubs adjacent to the Amtrak depot.

"Cool," he said, eyeing the neon-lit bars before heading into one for a beer. "I've heard the ratio of men to women here is 87-to-1, so this is awesome."

Most cities work to enhance entry points like transportation hubs with landmarks or other items as a matter of public pride and to market the communities to potential businesses. But first impressions may be beside the point in Williston, where the economy is exploding and jobs at the Bakken and Three Forks oil formations

outnumber the takers.

While the exact ratio isn't known, there's no question that with the influx of mostly male oil workers, Williston is testosterone heavy.

Whispers Nightclub and Heartbreakers Gentleman's Club stand out on the first block of Main Street, located diagonally from the chamber of commerce and the downtown senior center in the town of about 15,000.

"To be blunt and honest, I simply don't like them," Mayor Ward Koeser said of the bars. "I'm disappointed in the image they portray to the city. I wish they were not located in town, period."

Whispers owner Grace Delling and Heartbreakers owner Jared Holbrook did not return telephone calls from The Associated Press or messages left for them at the businesses.

The

dimly lit clubs featuring a rotation of topless dancers appeal to many among the throngs of men seeking their fortune in Williston, but some community leaders consider the businesses unmentionable.

"No comment," said Kevin Paschke, executive director of the Williston Chamber of Commerce. "I don't want to talk about it or get in the middle of it."

Whispers, the long-established strip club, also offers casino-style blackjack and pull-tab tickets. Little-known around town is that half of the gambling proceeds go to Williston State College, a two-year school with about 415 full-time students.

"I'm not going to make a moral judgment on these businesses," said Williston State College president Raymond Nadolny, who says the revenue helps fund scholarships, facilities and a fledgling hockey program.

"If we didn't have this kind of fiscal resources, we wouldn't be able to do these projects," he said.

Nadolny said he did not know how much revenue the college gets from strip club.

Cresta Allison, who has been a blackjack dealer at Whispers for a decade, said gambling revenue has doubled to about $3,000 daily in the past few years, which is split with the college's nonprofit fundraising foundation.

Allison, a 40-year-old single mother, works four nights a week and said her salary has increased from about $15,000 to $35,000. While the men-to-women ratio may work in her favor, she said she's not interested.

"They are nice people," Allison said of workers who have relocated to the area. "But they are not going to be here forever."

Koeser said Whispers has been in business for more than a decade and the city council approved the business license for Heartbreakers about a year ago. The mayor said he cast lone vote on the city council opposing the second strip club.

As a salve, the council approved a $1 million project to tidy up the grounds between the adult-oriented businesses and the Amtrak depot. But Koeser said no amount of landscaping can camouflage the strip clubs.

Debbie Hayden, who works at the senior center, said the elderly citizens are repulsed by the clubs across the street.

"Most of the seniors come in through the back door," she said. "We don't have trouble with the people but just the trash they leave behind."

A nearly 90-year-old man volunteers each day to pick up beer bottles and other garbage left by bar patrons, she said.

Hayden said she had hoped that city leaders would block the second club from being established on Main Street, especially since it serves as a gateway to the community.

"Imagine getting off the train and the first thing you see are a couple of strip clubs," she said. "I don't like it, but what are you going to do? It's Williston."

Bees Appear to Experience Moods

Grumpy? Giddy? According to some measures, bees appear to experience moods. Image: Charles Krebs/Corbis

If you have never watched bees carefully, you are missing out. Look closely as they gently curl and uncoil their mouthparts around food, and you will sense that they are not just eating but enjoying their meal. Watch a bit more, and the hesitant flicks and sags of their antennae seem to convey some kind of emotion. Do those twitches signal annoyance? Or something like enthusiasm?

Whether bees really experience any of these emotions is an open scientific question. It is also an important one, with implications for how we should treat not just bees but the great majority of animals. Recently studies by Melissa Bateson and her colleagues at Newcastle University in England have rekindled the debate over these issues by showing that honeybees may experience something akin to moods.

Using simple behavioral tests, Bate?son?s team showed that honeybees under stress tend to be pessimistic. Other tests have demonstrated that monkeys, dogs and starlings all tend to react similarly under duress and likewise see the proverbial glass as half empty. Although this finding does not?and cannot?prove that bees experience humanlike emotions, it does give pause. We should take seriously the possibility that insects, too, have emotions.

Beeline to the Brain
First, a little bit about bees. They are members of the diverse group of animals lacking backbones?indeed, more than 95 percent of all animal species are invertebrates. Despite the varied and often nuanced behaviors they can exhibit, invertebrates are sometimes regarded as life?s second string, a mindless and unfeeling band of alien critters. If that seems somewhat melodramatic, just consider our willingness to boil some of them alive.

Those judgments tend to arise from arguments about invertebrates? failure to demonstrate the behaviors we usually associate with a pain response. Whereas the yelps and grimaces of other mammals are familiar to us as announcements of hurt, invertebrates can appear to take their injuries in stride. Insects are commonly observed using their crushed limbs with undiminished force when walking, for example, and a locust will reportedly carry on with a meal while it is being eaten by a mantis.

Other attempts to draw a dividing line between creatures that feel and those that do not are rooted in comparative brain anatomy. Invertebrates lack a cortex, an amygdala and many of the other major brain structures routinely implicated in human emotion. Their nervous systems are quite minimalist compared with ours: we have roughly 100,000 bee brains? worth of neurons in our head. Some invertebrates, however, including insects, do possess a rudimentary version of our stress response system. So the question remains: Do they experience emotion in a way that we would recognize, or do they simply react to the world with an elaborate set of reflexes?

To gain some traction on this fascinating question, Bateson?s team followed the lead of recent investigations on ?pessimistic biases? in animals. In humans, the pessimistic bias refers to our well-known tendency to perceive threats or anticipate negative outcomes more frequently when we are feeling anxious or depressed. For example, in tests where people are shown ambiguous statements such as ?the doctor examined little Emily?s growth,? anxious individuals are less likely than others to conclude that Emily is fine and only her height was being checked.

Although the link between bad moods and negative judgments may not be terribly surprising, this correlation is still useful. We rely on it in our daily lives to make informed guesses about how people are feeling by observing their actions and choices. Scientifically, we can use it to study the emotions of creatures unable to tell us directly how they feel. The key here is to set up a controlled situation where animals encounter an ambiguous stimulus?think of it as a nonverbal version of the Emily statement.

Community pulls together to help family devastated by fire on Christmas Eve

SPLENDORA - A family dog saved four people inside a burning home in Splendora. Now, the pet is missing and everything the family owns is gone.

However, people are doing something special to help minimize the family?s loss. Their home, built by hand in Splendora?s woods, stood for decades. Its doors opened to most anyone with need.

Its caretaker just led her third community food drive. So, when the Hendrix?s haven burned to ruins Saturday morning, people came to cry and more.

?When you care that deeply about someone, it hurts you too,? said Keith King, a friend of the family. ?It gets you in your heart. You just want to do what you can to help them. I?m 55 years old and I?m not ashamed to say it?s very emotional for me.?

?Somebody this special is not supposed to have this kind of bad stuff happen to them,? said Tony Sever, who knows Jamie Hendrix through Cub Scouts where both are den leaders.

Between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. fire erupted in the Hendrix home. The family?s dog named Jackson went crazy barking. It woke Jamie Hendrix and her three children.

?I got out the door on the porch and then the breaker box was exploding right behind me,? Hendrix said. ?I didn?t know if I was going to be able to save my car behind me. (The flames) were right behind me.?

It destroyed practically everything they own, including Christmas gifts. For now, Christopher, 8, and Bryan Hendrix, 11, need shoes, shirts and pants. Carley, 15, needs the same. So does Jamie and her mother Stacey who also lived in the same house.

However, people who know Jamie through her job driving a school bus and through all the good she and her family have done in Splendora. Students at the high school organized a drive collecting clothes and money Saturday evening.

Others, like King, went to the Hendrix house also looking to help.

?We want to come together to help these people because that?s what life is about,? King said.

Investigators did not identify the fire?s cause. The family believes it started in the washing room.

India's New Buddhists

Neha Mohan was 24 years old and living the new Indian dream, with a job at a New Delhi marketing firm that hitched her wagon to the country's chugging economy. And then she let it all go. "I wasn't satisfied," she says over a cappuccino in a shopping mall on the city's southern fringe. Mohan decided to ditch business and study French. With a widowed mother to support, Mohan says her family couldn't understand why she would turn her back on so much opportunity. "There was a lot of pressure," she says. But like many other urban, educated Indians, Mohan, now 29, has found strength and solace in Buddhism.

The faith that was started 2,500 years ago by a worldly, disaffected Indian prince, Siddhartha Gautama, is finding new adherents among the modern princes and princesses of the country's prosperous ?lite. They're facing some of the same tensions that have made Buddhist practice so popular in the U.S. and Europe. "As in America, there are all kinds of new pressures that are at work on people, all kinds of mental stress," says K.T.S. Sarao, a professor of Buddhist studies at the University of Delhi. The wealth created by India's technology boom has brought with it the realization that material comfort isn't the same thing as happiness. Caught in that tender trap, Sarao says, "People turn to meditation."

But while Buddhism in the West might carry with it a hint of the exotic, here the appeal has more to do with its simplicity and pragmatism. That's what has drawn so many New Delhi yuppies to Soka Gakkai, a lay Buddhist movement whose extensive land holdings and political influence have sometimes made it controversial in Japan, where it was founded. Soka Gakkai has had a tiny presence in India for decades. But the group has blossomed in the last eight years, growing from 5,000 to 35,000 members ? 20,000 of them in New Delhi alone.

The core of the Soka Gakkai practice is the chanting of the phrase nam myoho renge kyo ? "I devote myself to the mystic law of the Lotus Sutra" ? but it is otherwise stripped of mysticism or ascetic self-denial. It teaches a mix of personal affirmation, positive thinking, and the basic Buddhist principles of peace and non-violence. Saurabh Popli, a lanky, 34-year-old architect, says he found in Soka Gakkai "a philosophy that can help us navigate these incredibly complex lives that we're living." He adds, "It doesn't require me to live in the mountains. It's a pragmatic way to live my life." Sunita Mehta, 60, a non-profit executive who's been part of the group for 13 years, says she's noticed that the newer members aren't the typical spiritual seekers: many are scientists, doctors or academics. Members chant privately, but meet regularly in each other's whitewashed apartment buildings and bougainvillea-shaded homes. They come, Mehta says, looking for a safe place to talk about their tough bosses and bad breakups. "These are not the things that you can take to the normal Hindu priest," she says.

Other established schools of Buddhist thought, like vipassana meditation and Tibetan Buddhism, are finding a newly receptive audience India as well. These new Buddhists don't convert officially; they simply take up some form of the practice, usually chanting or meditation, and often continue to observe the same holidays and family rituals they always did. That's another part of Buddhism's appeal in India, Sarao says. In a country where so much of social life revolves around religious festivals and ceremonies, Indians can enjoy the philosophical satisfactions of Buddhism without having to give up the faith they were born into. "They do not feel they're being disloyal to Hinduism in any way," he says.

Of course, that makes it difficult to know exactly how widespread Buddhist practice has become. About 1.7% of India's population, or 170 million people, were counted as Buddhist in the 2001 census, but the vast majority are the descendants of Dalits, who converted to Buddhism en masse in the 1950s as a reaction against their low status in the Hindu caste hierarchy. It was an inspiring political revolution, led by the great Dalit activist B.R. Ambedkar, but its success gave contemporary Buddhism in India the stigma of a lower-caste movement. That's changed with this recent move toward the faith among the ?lite. Sarao estimates that urban, affluent followers of Buddhism in India may number about 1 million.

With them, the story of Buddhism in India comes back to its beginnings. In his book An End to Suffering: The Buddha in the World, author Pankaj Mishra describes the troubled times in which the Buddha appeared. Dissatisfied with lives regimented around work, he writes, people gathered to listen to a new breed of freethinking philosopher, "India's first cosmopolitan thinkers." Those disaffected seekers came together in groves and parks built near the cities of the sixth-century B.C. Gangetic Plain. But any 21st century Delhi-ite would surely recognize the tensions driving their search for spiritual clarity.

Wal-Mart pulls formula after baby dies in Missouri (AP)

COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Wal-Mart and health officials awaited tests Thursday on a batch of powdered infant formula that was removed from more than 3,000 stores nationwide after a Missouri newborn who consumed it apparently died from a rare infection.

The source of the bacteria that caused the infection has not been determined, but it occurs naturally in the environment and in plants such as wheat and rice. The most worrisome appearances have been in dried milk and powdered formula, which is why manufacturers routinely test for the germs.

Wal-Mart pulled the Enfamil Newborn formula from shelves as a precaution following the death of little Avery Cornett in the southern Missouri town of Lebanon.

The formula has not been recalled, and the manufacturer said tests showed the batch was negative for the bacteria before it was shipped. Additional tests were under way.

"We decided it was best to remove the product until we learn more," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee said. "It could be returned to the shelves."

Customers who bought formula in 12.5-ounce cans with the lot number ZP1K7G have the option of returning them for a refund or exchange, Gee said.

The product is not exclusive to Wal-Mart. The manufacturer, Mead Johnson Nutrition, declined to answer questions about whether formula from that batch was distributed to other stores.

"We're highly confident in the safety and quality of our products," said Christopher Perille, a spokesman for the company based in the Chicago suburb of Glenview.

A second infant fell ill late last month after consuming several different types of powdered baby formula, but that child recovered, health officials said.

Powdered infant formula is not sterile, and experts have said there are not adequate methods to completely remove or kill all bacteria that might creep into formula before or during production.

Preliminary hospital tests indicated that Avery died of a rare infection caused by bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it's deemed extremely dangerous to babies less than 1 month old and those born premature.

The bacteria are "pervasive in the environment," Perille said. "There's a whole range of potential sources on how this infection may have got started."

A spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration said the agency is investigating the death, along with the Centers for Disease Control and the Missouri Department of Health. Investigators have collected samples from the family and are testing unopened formula purchased at stores.

Siobhan Delancey said the FDA gets four to six reports a year of infant infections related to formula and has not found a powder that tested positive since 2002.

The FDA is also investigating the other case of illness, which involved a baby from Illinois whose case was reported in neighboring Missouri. But the agency does not believe there is any connection between the two, Delancey said.

Public health investigators will look at the formula itself, as well as the water used in preparing it and at anything else the baby might have ingested, Perille said.

Only two to three cases a year are reported. New Mexico saw two in 2008, including one infant who died and another who suffered severe brain damage. A Tennessee infant died in 2001 after being infected.

It could be several days before test results are available.

The family submitted two types of infant formula for testing ? the powdered version and a pre-sterilized, ready-to-eat liquid ? as well as the distilled water used to prepare the powdered product.

"We're just trying to test anything that was consumed by the baby," Laclede County Health Director Charla Baker said.

Avery was taken to a pediatrician Dec. 15 ? a week after he was born ? after showing signs of stomach pain and lethargy. When the pain persisted the next day, his parents took him to an emergency room.

He died Sunday at a hospital in Springfield after being removed from life support.

The Missouri Department of Health advised parents to follow safety guidelines for preparing powdered infant formula, including washing hands, sterilizing all feeding equipment in hot, soapy water and preparing enough formula for only one feeding at a time.

A flood of calls from worried parents prompted Missouri officials to clarify that the formula pulled by Wal-Mart is not being provided to participants in the Women, Infants and Children federal program for low-income parents.

Turkish road accident kills 25 (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A passenger bus collided with a truck on a single lane road in southeast Turkey on Wednesday, killing 25 people, an official said.

Gov. Mustafa Toprak of Diyarbakir province said 16 other passengers were injured in the accident on a road linking Diyarbakir with the neighboring Batman province. He said some of the injured were in serious condition.

The mid-sized coach collided head-on with the truck, which was carrying bricks, said Ferit Basar, the mayor of the small town of Yukari Salat near the site of the crash.

The road was reduced to a single lane due to roadwork at the time of the crash, which probably helped cause the accident, Basar said.

Dogan news agency video footage showed medics stepping over a partly-covered body to rush an injured person on a stretcher to an ambulance. Body bags were placed side by side on the road, which was scattered with bricks.

The bus' front-end appeared cut open from the impact of the crash.

National Geographic Films to be folded into Hyde Park (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Ashok Amritraj is expanding his fiefdom by taking over National Geographic Films and what's left of a $100 million film fund with Abu Dhabi's Imagenation.

As TheWrap reported Wednesday, National Geographic Films is being shut down.

The money-losing studio has brought in a scant $1.7 million in revenue this year, with five films in release, including "The Last Lion," "The First Grader" and "Life in a Day."

The company is being folded into Amritaj's Hyde Park Entertainment, the companies announced Thursday. Hyde Park will be the managing partner, and the joint venture will develop feature films, documentaries and television series.

"We like Hyde Park's approach to the business, their growth and success in Asia, and the fact that Ashok and his team are already working closely with our partner, Image Nation," said Tim Kelly, president of National Geographic Society. "This partnership makes sense from all angles, and by folding our current feature film effort into this new venture, we will be able to pursue bigger, more ambitious projects and expand into growing markets like India and China."

Hyde Park's chairman, Amritraj, said in a statement, "Hyde Park and National Geographic have enjoyed a close relationship with Image Nation over the years, and by aligning the two brands, we create a dynamic venture that will deliver high-quality entertainment to audiences around the world."

Amritraj will serve as CEO of the new Nat Geo/IN/Hyde Park venture, with current National Geographic Feature Film President Daniel Battsek transitioning to a new role as a consultant. Hyde Park International will be the worldwide sales representative for the entity's feature film slate.

Contrasting Income Growth for Africa and Asia

Keen observers of the growth trajectories of countries cannot help noticing that apart from the larger economies in Asia, sub-saharan africa has registered unprecedented growth levels in the last decade. The argument is relevant because one of the major problems that the latter region has had is the inability to hold on to an upward growth momentum for meaningful periods of time. Instead, Africa's example has been fluctuations of growth rates that coincide with commodity price changes. The summary of this experience from the mid-1970s is that dependence of petroleum and agriculture-based commodities is not a reliable path to growth and improvement of welfare.?

And that's why the contention is that it is yet not possible to state with confidence that sub-saharan Africa has overcome the mix of economic and political problems that it faces. That brings me to this fascinating article in the East African which makes the credible and well-based claim that the countries in the eastern region of africa will be leaders in overall growth in the coming two decades. It is an article worthy of reading because it is based on a complicated but sensible method for assessment of the complexity of an economy and concludes that the countries of the region under reference have economies that are more complex and diverse in production than is warranted by the incomes today.?

The author of the article concentrates on a list of manufacturing firms to illustrate the claim derived from the index of complexity. it is less clear to me that all these firms confer a comparative advantage to the region because it is unlikely that all are able to compete internationally. My view is that given the fact that manufacturing industry is a smaller proportion of the overall GDP of these countries, there is scope for growth but not?necessarily?for all existing firms. A final point that is worthy of note is that in spite of the prediction that the region will lead in GDP growth, it will still fall behind India and China in respect of per capita income growth. I think the reason is that this region has a large and youthful population and is expected to maintain strong moderately population growth for a few more decades. ?

Ben Flajnik on Jennifer Love Hewitt: Not My Type!

Confirming a rumor we reported this summer, Bachelor star Ben Flajnik admits he did in fact go on a date with Jennifer Love Hewitt, and that she initiated it.

In the end, though, Ben felt SHE was not HIS type!

The reality star, who was left heartbroken by Ashley Hebert on The Bachelorette finale this summer, and who will be calling the shots starting January 2 (see The Bachelor spoilers for the scoop on the season), described the date as such:

Jennifer Love H. PicBen Flajnik Hair

Although the actress was "a nice girl," she didn't meet his needs.

"It was right in the middle of the time when I was deciding to be The Bachelor," Ben Flajnik said of the date, which consisted of dinner at his family's winery.

"When this is all said and done, I'm a regular guy, and ending up with a Hollywood celebrity is not something that I want or envision myself doing."

Ouch, JLH. Fortunately, this regular guy has no problem exposing himself to expanding his horizons in other ways, such as getting naked on TV.

"I have no problem with male nudity," he says of the clip of his backside seen in the trailer for the upcoming season that has left fans buzzing.

"When a beautiful woman asks you to go skinny-dipping on the beach, you don't say no. Granted there are cameras around, but it's a bare butt."

"It's not that big of a deal to me."

We imagine female viewers are okay with it, as well.

T-Mobile?s White Samsung Galaxy S II Is Going For $99 This Weekend Only

White SGSIIThe Samsung Galaxy S II is a very special phone. Even though it's been on the market for quite some time now, it's still one of the more beastly competitors on Android-flavored shelves. Of course, it's always had the price tag to prove it, going for between $230 and $250 just about everywhere. But T-Mobile has a pretty sweet deal going on a white Samsung Galaxy S II for this weekend only, and it could save you up to $130.

NIH's Stimulus Money Created at Least 21,000 Jobs
As expected, the $8.2 billion for extramural research that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) received from the 2009 stimulus act put many scientists and their staffs to work. But a congressional watchdog agency found it hard to be more specific about the impact of the controversial spending on the U.S. biomedical workforce.

Almost noiseless nanomechanical microwave amplifier

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Physicists in Aalto University, Finland, have shown how a nanomechanical oscillator can be used for detection and amplification of feeble radio waves or microwaves. A measurement using such a tiny device, resembling a miniaturized guitar string, can be performed with the least possible disturbance. The results were recently published in the British journal Nature.

The researchers cooled the nanomechanical oscillator, thousand times thinner than a human hair, down to a low temperature near the absolute zero at -273 centigrade. Under such extreme conditions, even nearly macroscopic sized objects follow the laws of quantum physics which often contradict common sense. In the Low Temperature Laboratory experiments, the nearly billion atoms comprising the nanomechanical resonator were oscillating in pace in their shared quantum state.

The scientists had fabricated the device in contact with a superconducting cavity resonator, which exchanges energy with the nanomechanical resonator. This allowed amplification of their resonant motion. This is very similar to what happens in a guitar, where the string and the echo chamber resonate at the same frequency. Instead of the musician playing the guitar string, the energy source was provided by a microwave laser.

Microwaves get amplified by interaction of quantum oscillations

Researchers from the Low Temperature Laboratory, Aalto University, have shown how to detect and amplify electromagnetic signals almost noiselessly using a guitar-string like mechanical vibrating wire. In the ideal case the method adds only the minimum amount of noise required by quantum mechanics.

The presently used semiconductor transistor amplifiers are complicated and noisy devices, and operate far away from a fundamental disturbance limit set by quantum physics. The Low Temperature Laboratory scientists showed that by taking advantage of the quantum resonant motion, injected microwave radiation can be amplified with little disturbance. The principle hence allows for detecting much weaker signals than usually.

"Any measurement method or device always adds some disturbance. Ideally, all the noise is due vacuum fluctuations predicted by quantum mechanics. In theory, our principle reaches this fundamental limit. In the experiment, we got very close to this limit," says Dr. Francesco Massel.

"The discovery was actually quite unexpected. We were aiming to cool the nanomechanical resonator down to its quantum ground state. The cooling should manifest as a weakening of a probing signal, which we observed. But when we slightly changed the frequency of the microwave laser, we saw the probing signal to strengthen enormously. We had created a nearly quantum limited microwave amplifier," says Academy Research Fellow Mika Sillanp?? who planned the project and made the measurements.

Certain real-life applications will benefit from the better amplifier based on the new Aalto method, but reaching this stage requires more research effort. Most likely, the mechanical microwave amplifier will be first applied in related basic research, which will further expand our knowledge of the borderline between the everyday world and the quantum realm.

According to Academy Research Fellow Tero Heikkil?, the beauty of the amplifier is in its simplicity: it consists of two coupled oscillators. Therefore, the same method can be realized in basically any media. By using a different structure of the cavity, one could detect terahertz radiation which would also be a major application.

The research was carried out in the Low Temperature Laboratory, which belongs to the Aalto University School of Science, and is part of the Centre of Excellence in Low Temperature Quantum Phenomena and Devices of the Finnish Academy. The devices used in the measurements were fabricated by VTT Nanotechnologies and microsystems. The research was funded by the Finnish Academy, European Research Council ERC, and the European Union.

Carrie Underwood Wins Big At American Country Awards

Jason Aldean top prize-getter with six trophies.

It was another lucky trip to Las Vegas for Carrie Underwood at Monday night's American Country Awards, where the former "American Idol" winner collected a trio of trophies at the star-studded event. While Jason Aldean was the top prize-getter with six awards, including Artist of the Year, Underwood took home three, including Female Artist of the Year, and Music Video and Single of the Year by a Female Artist for "Mama's Song."

Aldean was the night's biggest nominee, tied with eight nods with the Zac Brown Band. The singer's My Kinda Party swept up Album of the Year, Touring Artist of the Year and Single of the Year by a Male Artist for the album's title track. He also scored Single and Music Video of the Year for "Don't You Wanna Stay," a collaboration with original "Idol" winner .

Underwood and Clarkson weren't the only twang-pop "Idol" alumni to take home the Fender Stratocaster guitar-shaped hardware at the show, co-hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Trace Adkins. Last year's winner, country crooning high schooler Scotty McCreery, was named New Artist of the Year on the same day his debut album, Clear as Day, went gold.

The night mostly belonged to Nashville's new school, as such up-and-comers as Thompson Square nabbed a trio of guitars -- Single of the Year by a New Artist and by a Group and Music Video by a New Artist for "Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not." The Breakthrough Artist of the Year winner Chris Young also won Single of the Year for "Voices." Grammy winners Lady Antebellum were named Group of the Year.

These kinds of shows are typically another notch in Taylor Swift's belt, but despite six nominations, she ended the night with no new hardware.

RIM's Indonesia CEO to be charged over sale stampede (Reuters)

JAKARTA (Reuters) ? Blackberry manufacturer Research In Motion's Indonesia CEO will be charged with negligence after a sale last month of its smart phones turned into a stampede, police said on Monday.

The police said Andrew Cobham was responsible for the promotional event on November 25 in Jakarta, which attracted a crowd of about 5,000 people. Police halted the sale after dozens passed out in the crush.

"The suspect has been banned from travelling overseas. He must go through the legal process here," said police investigator Budi Irawan.

Cobham has not been detained. The maximum penalty for negligence is nine months in jail.

Police also named a security consultant hired by RIM, an event organizer and a manager of the sale's shopping centre venue, as suspects who are likely to be charged.

RIM was offering a 50 percent discount to 1,000 people at a launch of its latest phone in Jakarta, with people starting to queue since before midnight.

Indonesia is one of the fast growing markets for the Blackberry, with about two million users.

The strong demand reflects booming consumption among an emerging middle class in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, with the country having been a bright spot for a firm that capped a dismal year with a profit warning last week.

There was no immediate comment from either RIM or Cobham.

Steelers?rout Bengals

Roethlisberger throws 2 TDs as Pittsburgh (9-3) sweeps season series with 35-7 win

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger celebrates a touchdown against the Bengals.

By WILL GRAVES

updated 6:11 p.m. ET Dec. 4, 2011

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers needed just 15 minutes to provide the Cincinnati Bengals a refresher course on what it takes to win in December.

Run the ball. Create turnovers. A big play or two on special teams helps. So does having a quarterback who knows what he's doing when the games dwindle to a precious few.

It's a formula the defending AFC champions have used for years. It has rarely looked as effective as it did in a 35-7 win Sunday.

Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdown passes to Mike Wallace, Rashard Mendenhall ran for two more and the Steelers used an explosive second quarter to crush error-prone Cincinnati.

"We're in it now," linebacker James Farrior said. "Right now is our time. ... We already started our playoffs."

It certainly looked like it as Pittsburgh (9-3) swept the season series from Cincinnati (7-5) for the second straight year to end any realistic hopes the Bengals have of winning the AFC North.

"It's tough," said Cincinnati wide receiver A.J. Green, who caught an 11-yard touchdown pass but also committed a false start penalty that wiped out another score. "We shot ourselves in the foot sometimes. Being the veteran team they are, they capitalized on everything we did."

It's what the Steelers do this time of year.

Pittsburgh has been a mixed bag at times this season, often playing to the level of the competition, regardless of who it is.

The same team that handled New England with ease six weeks ago is the same one that barely escaped woeful Kansas City with a win last Sunday night, raising concerns about Roethlisberger's fractured right thumb, the running game and a defense nursing injuries to safety Troy Polamalu (concussion) and LaMarr Woodley (hamstring).

There were no anxious final moments against the Bengals. Pittsburgh's best quarter of the season left little room for doubt, scoring four touchdowns in a span of less than 12 minutes to break it open.

"Finally," Wallace said. "We always make it harder than it has to be. Today, we came out with a lot of emotion and a lot of energy. The guys just wanted to win. We knew what we had to do. It's getting closer to the playoffs and it's time for us to get better."

While the Bengals appear to be getting worse.

Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton passed for just 135 yards, was sacked three times by Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison and spent the fourth quarter on the bench as a preventative measure with the game out of reach.

"We can't let this hurt us," Dalton said. "We can't let this affect the next four."

Blocking it out might be tough.

Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis did little to downplay the game's importance, practically admitting his team's hopes for an outside shot at a divisional title would all but disappear if his surprising team couldn't earn a split with the Steelers.

The Bengals hung tough in a 24-17 loss to Pittsburgh three weeks ago, the kind of gritty performance that gave them hope they could earn a split with their division rivals and stay alive in their quest for a second division title in three seasons.

No chance.

Thrust into the role of contender, the Bengals wilted in the spotlight, reverting back to the kind of mistakes they've avoided while rebuilding on the fly behind the tandem of Dalton and Green. Cincinnati committed 10 penalties for 109 yards and offered little resistance to lose for the third time in four games.

"They beat us in every area today ? beat us on offense, beat us on defense, beat us in special teams," Lewis said.

Roethlisberger, who aggravated his injured thumb in practice during the week, overcame a slow start to complete 15 of 23 passes for 176 yards and the two scores to Wallace. His final completion, a 9-yard toss to tight end David Johnson in the fourth quarter, was the 2,026th of his career, breaking Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw's club record.

"It's obviously an awesome honor," Roethlisberger said. "Anytime you break a guy like that's record, it's a great thing."

It was that kind of day for Pittsburgh. Wide receiver Hines Ward became the 19th player in NFL history to eclipse 12,000 career yards while Harrison joined Chad Brown and Mike Merriweather as the only players in team history to record at least two three-sack games in the same season.

"You have to start playing good, all-around football," Ward said. "Today, we displayed that."

The Bengals did not.

Cincinnati's miscues started early. Green flinched ever so slightly just before the snap to negate a 4-yard touchdown pass from Dalton to Jermaine Gresham on the Bengals' opening possession.

Mike Nugent came out to kick a short field goal only to have it called back after being flagged for delay of game. Nugent's kick never had a shot the second time around. Rookie Cam Heyward swatted it out of harm's way to record Pittsburgh's first blocked kick in more than two years.

It's as close as the Bengals would get to making it interesting.

Mendenhall, who has been erratic, gave the Steelers the lead with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. He upped the lead to 14-0 with a nifty 5-yard cutback run.

The Bengals continued to self-destruct on the ensuing kickoff when Brandon Tate fumbled and the Steelers recovered at the Cincinnati 23. Roethlisberger needed just three plays to hit Wallace for a 12-yard score to make it 21-0.

Dalton found Green for an 11-yard score to briefly give the Bengals life, but Brown extinguished any momentum with a scintillating 60-yard punt return just before the half that gave the Steelers a 28-7 lead at the break.

The Bengals came in with an NFL-record three double-digit second half rallies, but not this time. Playing with a lead Pittsburgh's defense teed off on Dalton and sent fans sprinting to the exits early with victory in hand.

"It's just embarrassing," Cincinnati defensive back Chris Crocker said. "You don't feel good at all. When they're beating you so bad that their fans leave, that's just a bad feeling."

Notes: The Steelers have swept the Bengals seven times in the last 11 seasons. ... Woodley started for the first time since getting hurt against New England on Oct. 30, but left in the first half after "tweaking" his left hamstring according to Tomlin. ... Pittsburgh hosts Cleveland on Thursday night, while the Bengals host Houston on Sunday.
