The 7 Best Foods For Seniors - Retirement Homes

Nearly half of Americans usually make New Year?s resolutions, but less than eight per cent actually follow through on their pledges, the Journal of Clinical Psychology reported last year.

And although New Year?s Day already passed, it?s never too late to set personal goals, and one great way to start 2013 is by eating healthier.

Courtesy of AARP.com, here are seven of the best foods for people over the age of 50:

1/ Apples- These fruits can help to reduce cholesterol, so remember the old adage, ?an apple a day keeps the doctor away.?

2/ Asparagus- Featuring the carotene lycopene, these vegetables can work to reduce the chances of contracting prostate cancer.

3/ Blueberries- Packed with Vitamins C and K, pick up a few of these berries the next time you?re at the grocery store.

4/ Broccoli- Full of fiber, this green vegetable can help boost your immune system.

5/ Butternut squash- If you want to keep your eyes strong, take advantage of the beta-carotene in butternut squash.

6/ Dark chocolate- To help protect your heart, enjoy a piece of dark chocolate for the antioxidants it provides.

7/ Coffee- Both regular and decaf, coffee can help prevent heart attacks.

Eating healthy can be convenient if you live in an assisted living community, but if you live alone and buy your own groceries, make sure to add these items to your next list.

ZURICH (AP) ? Lionel Messi became the first four-time winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award after shattering the world record with 91 goals last year for Barcelona and Argentina.

The 25-year-old won for the fourth straight time, beating Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta in voting announced Monday. His 91 goals topped Gerd Mueller's mark of 85 for Bayern Munich and Germany in 1972.

Abby Wambach became the first American to win FIFA Women's Player of the Year since Mia Hamm in 2001 and 2002. Pia Sundhage was voted top women's coach after leading Wambach and the U.S. team to the gold medal at last summer's London Olympics.

Messi received 41.60 percent of the points in votes by national team coaches and captains plus selected media. Ronaldo got 23.68 percent and Iniesta 10.91 percent.

"To tell the truth, this is really unbelievable to get the fourth award. I am so nervous," Messi said in Spanish, wearing a black tuxedo jacket and bow tie, both with a white polka-dot pattern in an unexpectedly flamboyant touch.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann and captain Carlos Bocanegra both voted Messi first, as did Soccer America's Paul Kennedy.

Zinedine Zidane of France and Ronaldo of Brazil were voted FIFA Player of the Year three times before the award merged in 2010 with France Football's Golden Ball, given to the European player of the year. The Golden Ball, or Ballon d'Or, was won three times by Michel Platini of France and Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten of the Netherlands.

The 32-year-old Wambach received 20.67 percent to edge teammate Alex Morgan (13.5) and five-time winner Marta of Brazil (10.87). Jill Ellis, who was interim U.S. coach last fall, voted Wambach first, as did Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, while American captain Christie Rampone voted Morgan first.

"I'm very, very surprised," Wambach said. "Not only do I think Marta and Alex could have won, but many other players could have been here as well."

Wambach, who received the award from American goalkeeper Hope Solo, scored five goals in London as the U.S. won its third straight Olympic title. She has 152 international goals, six shy of Hamm's record.

"She's so completely deserving of this award," Morgan said. "She's made such a huge mark on women's soccer over the past decade. She's an inspiration to not only the thousands of young girls around the country and world, but also to me."

The U.S. players were serenaded from the stage by Sundhage, who sang a verse of the Bob Dylan song "If Not For You" when she received her award.

Sundhage, who left the U.S. job after the Olympics to coach her native Sweden, got 28.59 percent of the vote to defeat Nono Sasaki of Japan (23.83) and Bruno Bini of France (9.02).

Vicente del Bosque was voted top men's coach after leading Spain to its third straight title in a major tournament, the 2012 European Championship. Del Bosque got 34.51 percent to win over Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho (20.49), who won last year, and Pep Guardiola (12.91) who won in 2011 and retired from Barcelona last spring.

The three men's Player of the Year were on the World XI All-Star team chosen by the FIFPro group of players' unions, comprising 50,000 members worldwide.

They selected a team composed entirely of players from Spanish clubs, with nine repeating their selection from one year ago.

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas was selected as goalkeeper, joined on defense by teammates Sergio Ramos and Marcelo and by Barcelona's Dani Alves and Gerard Pique. Iniesta was joined in midfield by Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso. Messi led the attack with Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao. Marcelo and Falcao replaced Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney from the 2011 team.

The Puskas Award for the best goal in 2012, voted on by fans, was won by Miroslav Stoch of Fenerbahce, who had a long-range volley last March in a Turkish league game against Genclerbirligi.

Uzbekistan won the fair play award for its good disciplinary record. Sepp Blatter made the FIFA presidential award to Franz Beckenbauer, who captained and coached West Germany to World Cup victories, and then led the local organizing committee of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

How to Find Out if You Are a DES Daughter ? Catching Health ...

DES daughter Patricia Royall and her mother, the late Virginia Inness-Brown Conn

Since my?post about the DES breast cancer trial?that gets underway in Boston this week, I?ve been asked how you would know if you were exposed to DES.

DES, or diethylstilbestrol, is a synthetic estrogen that was prescribed to millions of pregnant women between 1938 and 1971 to prevent miscarriages and premature labor, and other complications. It was later found not only to be ineffective but also that it had harmful side effects.

Known DES health risks?(courtesy CDC)?

Women prescribed DES while pregnant are at a modestly increased risk for breast cancer
Women exposed to DES before birth (in the womb), known as DES daughters, are at increased risk for: Clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) of the vagina and cervix ? ?Reproductive tract structural differences ? ?Pregnancy complications ? ?Infertility
Men exposed to DES before birth (in the womb), known as DES sons, are at increased risk for non-cancerous epididymal cysts.

Since the 1970s, thousands of lawsuits have been filed as a result of the alleged link between DES and cervical and vaginal cancer, as well as fertility problems. Many of the cases were settled out of court. The case that is about to be heard in federal court in Boston is reportedly the first major suit that alleges a link between DES and breast cancer in DES daughters over the age of 40.

Finding out if you were exposed to DES
Unfortunately, many people have no idea that they were exposed to DES or that they are at risk of potential health issues.?According to?DES Action USA, because the drug was given to pregnant women so many years ago, even for individuals with DES-related health issues, it is often difficult to determine whether exposure actually occurred.

Medical records can be found in some of the following places:

Physician
If the physician is still practicing you can request all medical records in writing. If he is no longer in practice or has passed away his records may have been transferred to another physician or you can call the health department in your county to find out who has the records.
Hospital
Write to the medical records department of the hospital where the birth took place.
Pharmacy
If you know what pharmacy was used you may be able to get records from them, however some pharmacists may not have records that old.

DES Action recommends sending self-addressed stamped envelopes, rather than making phone calls to obtain the necessary records.

Women may have taken other drugs during pregnancy and determining which might have contained DES is sometimes difficult. If DES is included it usually states DES or Stilbestrol. If you are unsure, contact DES Action USA?at 1-800-DES-9288 or by?email?and someone will help you decide whether the drug did contain DES.

If you have difficulty obtaining your mother?s medical records inform the physician, hospital, or pharmacy that these are your birth records. Although the records are owned by the provider you have a right to see and copy those records.

If a military physician cared for the pregnancy you can call 1-800-827-1000 and request Standard Form 180 to get your records.

If the records cannot be located, but you have reason to believe that you may have been exposed to DES, your physician may want to follow the guidelines for DES exposure?just to be on the safe side.

DES trial updates
If you would like to know what is happening with the DES breast cancer trial,?DESInfo?will be providing regular updates. ?Opening statements, which had been scheduled for Monday January 7, will now take place on TUESDAY,?JANUARY 8 at 9 a.m.?at the John Joseph Moakley U. S. Courthouse?in Boston, MA.

Send me a comment if you have any questions, and I will do my best to find you the answers.

Chavez ally elected, could be caretaker president

Leo Ramirez / AFP - Getty Images

The president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello speaks outside the National Assembly in Caracas on Saturday. He was elected Assembly chief on Saturday as President Hugo Chavez recovered from another cancer surgery in Cuba.

By NBC News and wire services

Venezuelan lawmakers re-elected a close ally of President Hugo Chavez as Assembly chief on Saturday, paving the way for him to become a caretaker president if the socialist leader does not recover from cancer surgery.

Diosdado Cabello, a combative ex-soldier, was cemented by the ?Chavista?-dominated legislature as the third most powerful figure in government, behind Chavez and Vice President Nicolas Maduro.

"As a patriot ... I swear to be supremely loyal in everything I do, to defend the fatherland, its institutions, and this beautiful revolution led by our Comandante Hugo Chavez," Cabello said as he took the oath, his hand on the constitution.?

Chavez was elected in 1999 and was among the first of the so-called ?pink tide? of elected leftist leaders in Latin America. He allies himself with the Castro regime in Cuba, President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua and Evo Morales in Bolivia.?

In the last 18 months, Chavez, 58, has undergone four surgeries in Cuba, where he is currently recovering. On Thursday, the Venezuelan government said he was suffering from a ?severe? respiratory infection that hindered his breathing.?The Venezuelan leader has not been seen in public for more than three weeks.

Hours before the vote to re-elect Cabello, thousands of Chavez supporters clad in red gathered, chanting: "We are all Chavez! Our comandante will be well! He will return!"?

If Chavez had to step down, or died, Cabello would take over the running of the country as Assembly president and a new election would be organized within 30 days. Chavez's heir apparent, Maduro, would be the Socialist Party's candidate.?

The opposition says Chavez's absence would be just the latest sign that he is no longer fit to govern. Cabello slammed their criticism.

"Get this into your heads," he shouted. "Hugo Chavez was elected president and he will continue to be president beyond Jan. 10. No one should have any doubt." His fellow Socialist Party lawmakers cheered.?

The opposition, who had days before demanded details of the president?s health, sat stony-faced. One of their legislators had earlier told the session that it was not just the head of state who was ill: "The republic is sick," he said.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed reporting.

HP Pocket Playlist WiFi drive takes video from Hulu or Netflix, shares media with five devices

There's no shortage of WiFi storage devices these days, but it's not often that they collect web video -- which makes HP's new Pocket Playlist at least somewhat worthy of a closer look. Through a PlayLater subscription and PC software, the wireless drive can store video from Hulu, Netflix and other sources for playback when it's more convenient. Anyone not keen on trying to snag a local copy of a stream can still share up to 16 movies, 7,600 songs or 10,000 photos to as many as five devices, including Android, iOS and Windows Phone gear. HP ships the Pocket Playlist on February 15th for $129.

Obama's Dad-Daughter Day in Hawaii

Over the past two weeks, President Obama has passed his days in Hawaii hitting the gym, golfing with friends and relaxing on the beach with his family.

Today, he enjoyed some father-daughter time, bowling with Malia and Sasha and going out for Hawaiian shave ice, an annual tradition.

After spending the afternoon at the bowling alley at the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay, Obama and his daughters stopped at Island Snow Shave Ice, a small eatery in a shopping center near their Kailua vacation house.

A long line quickly formed outside as onlookers tried to get a glimpse of the president in what was his first public appearance of his annual holiday vacation in his native state.

After several minutes inside, Malia and Sasha and several other children, presumably family friends, emerged with cool treats in hand. The casually dressed president soon followed, holding a large green and red shave ice in an assortment of flavors.

"How are you doing?" he asked folks gathered outside as he began shaking hands.

Then it was back in the motorcade and off to their vacation house, where the Obamas are spending the evening in.

Critical Review

An article review of Yunfei? Chong ,2011.? ? The Research on how Chinese vocational education break through the current bottleneck of its development , Concurrent discussion on how to establish the mechanism of school enterprise cooperation in Chinese vocational education?. ????Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College

This article focuses on ?how to develop Chinese Vocational Education by establish the mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation . The authors have stressed the cooperation between schools and enterprises that appear to have a problem in creating a program of bilateral cooperation which respectively provide help to achieve a common goal or a win-win due to? the failure of the government to encourage partnerships between schools and enterprises.; government-lead ?. The author aims to highlight the collaboration between industry and academia like ?Dual System?? vocational education models in Germany that provide job internship ,one of the reason for difficulty of school-enterprises cooperation; administrative subordination;. Yunfei mentions that perhaps almost vocational colleges perfom actively, but it not accompany with enterprise or industry that did not contact the colleges forwardly.

This article is significant given that the difficulties of school-enterprise cooperation is lack of talent training as well as evaluated by educational expert. ?However as a result of somewhat abstract implications, the article would perhaps only be of interest on ?co-sponsorship mechanism and policy guarantee especially on government-lead.? The authors have used ?vocational education models to describe the government- lead in developing countries like ;Amerika, England, Germany and Japan; and to compare the efficient model of personnel training.Although showing differences in ??implementation but strives to achieve the common goal of providing provisions to ensure the training is going well. The author mention it provides good reference to strengthen the government ?lead, strengthen the legislation of vocational education, strengthen the overall plan and supervise, and establish the cooperation mechanism.

The author has started writing specifying keywords should be known and so began a discussion on the topic. The author have a very good in processing due to problems in school-enterprise Cooperation is more specific that can identify the cause of how the occurrence constraints to progress chinese vocational education. The topic has an objective to be achive. The author has made a claims that government-lead is the only way to break through the current bottleneck of vocational education development but ?an evidence was provided is not reliable. The conclusion also are drawn just a simple word and not complement. The principal of the text can be better organized

As a conclusion it can be said that the author has managed to transfer information on how to solve the bottleneck problem as experienced by chinese vocational education which should strengthen the school-enterprise cooperation.? To the success of this cooperation must be the government in terms of provision of assistance and reform The author seems to only look to the government-lead, although the schools are supposed to provide entrepreneurship education as recommended by Robert Kowasaki in her book, rich dad, poor dad where he suggested that education for entrepreneurship have since translated children from school. Similarly, vocational education should start at school with teachers who are trained as discussed by Qiu Feiyue and Lifang Le (2010). Quality education will produce a quality student . I am? agree with Malaysia system vocational school that was up grade to be a college and develop the teachers skill.
