Aurora Attackers Were Looking For Google's Surveillance Database

An anonymous reader writes "When in early 2010 Google shared with the public that they had been breached in what became known as the Aurora attacks, they said that the attackers got their hands on some source code and were looking to access Gmail accounts of Tibetan activists. What they didn't make public is that the hackers have also accessed a database containing information about court-issued surveillance orders that enabled law enforcement agencies to monitor email accounts belonging to diplomats, suspected spies and terrorists. Whether this was the primary goal of the attacks as well as how much information was exfiltrated is unknown. current and former U.S. government officials interviewed by the Washington Post say that the database in question was possibly accessed in order to discover which Chinese intelligence operatives located in the U.S. were under surveillance."

Florida High School Student Expelled and Charged with Two ...

Florida High School Student Expelled and Charged with Two Felonies For Consensual Relationship With Fellow?Student

SELF-_540x405_244x183We have previously discussed the continued prosecution of minors for engaging in sexual conduct under state laws. These laws have a sexist record of boys prosecuted for having sex with a minor where girls were treated as the victim, even when the sex was consensual and both were minors or close in age. There is a new case out of Indian River, Florida that is equally troubling. Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, is a senior in high school and is facing felony charges for engaging in a sexual relationship?with another girl at her school. Despite an outcry against prosecuting Hunt for consensual sex, the prosecutor has refused to drop the charges of two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a child 12 to 16 years of age. Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman has insisted that he will only agree to a plea deal where she would accept one felony conviction and a two-year sentence of home confinement. Such a plea would likely put Hunt on the sex offender registry for life.

The girls started dating when Kate turned 18 and the other girl was 14. When the other girl?s parents found out about the relationship, they called police. Police then tapped a telephone conversation in which Kate told the girl that she loved her.

Kate?s mother believes the charges are the result of homophobia and intolerance for a lesbian relationship.

Kate was previously selected as the ?Student with Most School Spirit? and had a good record at Sebastian River High School. However, after the arrest, she was kicked off the school?s basketball team by her coach, who said that the school wanted to avoid ?drama.? The school board then expelled her from the high school in her graduating year.

coltonConsent is not a defense under the Florida law criminalizing sexual activity with a minor between the ages of 12 and 16. Bruce Colton, state attorney for Florida?s 19th circuit, has insisted that the case will go to trial unless Hunt pleads guilty. The second-degree felony charges can result in a 15 year sentence with registration as a sex offender. We have previously seen the disabling impact of such registration on young people convicted for statutory rape in consensual relations with other students.

As discussed earlier, some states like Ohio have struck down parts of their statutory rape laws.

The concern is that there are obviously many cases involving minors as young as 14 engaging in sexual relationships. Those cases are rarely prosecuted. Moreover, regardless of whether this is a homosexual or heterosexual relationship, it involved consent between two high school students. The question is whether this could not have been handled with a restraining order preventing further contact as opposed to treating this as a criminal matter.

What do you think?

Tumblr's Adult Fare Accounts For 11.4% Of Site's Top 200K Domains, Adult Sites Are Leading Category Of Referrals

bed-black-black-and-white-cig-cigarette-cigarettes-Favim.com-87776How much of Tumblr is porn, and what is Yahoo going to do about it? On the latter, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer spoke to its plans for addressing content that is not “brand safe” earlier this morning?on a call about its?$1.1 billion acquisition of the site, saying that Yahoo will need to have “good tools for retargeting,” and will “monetize in a way that is tasteful.” But as for the former, it’s often been something of a black box – there simply wasn’t publicly available data. However, now, we may have some answers. According to an analysis of?Tumblr’s 200,000 most-visited domains, 22,775 of them are adult – or 11.4 percent. The analysis was?performed by web measurement firm SimilarGroup, a company which raised $2.5 million earlier this year with the intention of competing with Alexa’s stronghold in web rankings. The measurement firm analyzed the volume of visits to these adult subdomains, and found that 16.6 percent of the traffic that visits Tumblr takes place on adult blogs. In addition, 22.37 percent of incoming referral traffic from external sites to Tumblr is from adult websites, making that the leading category for referrals. Meanwhile, 8.02 percent of outbound traffic from Tumblr goes to adult websites. Below are some screenshots from SimilarWeb Pro, which shows Tumblr data from the past year (May 2012 to April 2013), detailing the breakdown of referrals and outgoing links: Neither Tumblr nor Yahoo responded to requests for comment, as of publication time. Tumblr’s secret to successful growth back in the early days, was in fact, its adult content. In some circles (read: mainstream users, typically men), it’s what the site is still known for today.?Anecdotally, this is the kind of thing I hear all the time when I bring up Tumblr among members of this not-so-tech-savvy group: “Oh, you mean that porn site?” Uh-huh. To be fair, any site that relies on user-generated content is going to have a porn problem – even Instagram and Pinterest get dirty at times. But Tumblr seems to be better known for it than the others. Still, Mayer is right – it’s a matter of targeting Tumblr’s ads correctly when they do go live, to make sure that porn and brands are not living side-by-side on the same page. All Things D broke down why Tumblr’s porn stash is not a problem for Yahoo, explaining that Tumblr’s ads appear in the sidebar of

New Samsung Galaxy S4 features coming soon to Galaxy S III

MADRID, May 20 (Reuters) - Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has spoken out in defence of his captain Iker Casillas and confirmed that the Real Madrid goalkeeper will be part of the world and European champions' squad at next month's Confederations Cup in Brazil. Casillas has been warming the bench at Real since returning from a broken hand after he fell out with coach Jose Mourinho but Del Bosque said he had faith in his captain, who turned 32 on Monday, and he would be travelling to the warm-up tournament for next year's World Cup. ...

A new look at the newly official NVIDIA Shield [video]

NVIDIA Shield.

It's coming this June for $349, and we've got your first look at the refined NVIDIA Shield with stock Android

Easily two of the more exciting announcements to come out of CES 2013 this past January were the Tegra 4 mobile processor and graphics platform from NVIDIA, and its "Project Shield" handheld Android gaming controller. Combining some of the most powerful mobile processing graphics available with a traditional gaming controller -- and a 5-inch, 720p display for good measure -- we finally had the potential for some real console-style gaming on Android.

The big question, of course, would be the price. Today, that's been answered. Shield -- having dropped its "project" designation -- will retail for $349, a bit lower than what many of us here had expected. But "we're not selling Shield at a loss," NVIDIA told us from its headquarters in Santa Clara.

However the math works out, what you get is a highly capable mobile gaming system that in fact can best consoles in some areas.

We got a new look at NVIDIA Shield, with its refined hardware and expanded gaming roster.

Deer Hunting Tactics - A Beginner's Guide | Content for Reprint

Author: Joshua L Todd | Total views: 36 Comments: 0

The subject of hunting for beginners seems like it should be simple, but it's not. There are things that experienced hunters are still learning when it comes to the hunt and the techniques involved. We all have to start somewhere and there's no shame in that. So, if you're a beginner hunter, read on and hopefully learn a thing or two.

Knowing where to start can be hard. Trying to tell adults who are interested in hunting how to hunt can be hard to someone who has been doing it since he was a child. When I started, all I really had to do was listen to my dad and follow his instructions. So this is a learning process for me too, to put myself where you are as an adult beginner. It's not a bad thing. Getting started hunting is an awesome idea for anyone looking to get into it.

Let me first say that starting out during hunting season is a very bad idea. Just throwing yourself into it can be fine in many things you do in life, but in hunting you really want to set the process going before it's time to get out there and hunt. That way, when you do get out there, you will be educated and pretty familiar with whatever equipment you choose to go with, whether that is rifle or bow. Spend some time beforehand learning how to get good on the gun or bow (or both) and practice every chance you can get.

First Things First

Try and attend a hunter education class. These are usually known as hunter safety courses. This class should help you understand more about the process of hunting and the wildlife out there. It is invaluable as it teaches you about gun safety, which is most important. You will meet other beginner hunters and perhaps form friendships with them (and just maybe gain a hunting buddy in the process). This is a great atmosphere for you to get those first shots in. You can check with your state's local wildlife agency to find a class near you.

Find a Mentor

If you know someone who is a licensed hunter, you could go out with him or her and watch as they go about the process of it. This way you can take it all in without the chance of mishandling equipment or not being ready. The course above is still invaluable, but this is good in addition to the class.

Review Your State's Regulations

Check the state's license requirements to make sure you meet all of them before investing any money into gear and such. Learn when you can hunt and when you can't, find out what kinds of equipment you can use at what time. Different parts of the state may have different or more restrictive regulations.

Before Handling a Gun

Make sure you understand all the rules of basic firearm safety. Even experienced hunters need to read and review these from time to time. Remember that rudimentary safety procedures also apply to bows and other archery equipment. Always be safe with this equipment.

Get Some Practice In

Since you got those first shots in at your safety course, now's the time to go practice at a range. Do not go out and buy your own gun until you know what kind you are most comfortable with and you start doing well at the range. Borrow a gun if you can or rent one from the range. You won't get good unless you practice and then practice some more.

What if I Want to Bow Hunt?

This isn't a slight on anyone, believe me. I started out a newbie too, and I just have to say that from knowing what it's like to use both gun and bow in the hunt that bow hunting is not really for beginners. If you do choose to start this way, practice is even more important as it's a lot more challenging to control bows or crossbows than firearms. It's that extra challenge that draws many hunters to bow hunting, but too many new hunters have headed into the field with too little practice. It takes time to become good in either one, so remember that practice is key.

A Few More Tips for the Beginner

- Learn the area before you hunt. Before hunting season even starts, get familiar with the area you'll be hunting.

- Get you hunting license before heading out into the woods. Not only is it illegal to hunt without one, but that money helps to preserve hunting and wildlife for future beginner hunters.

- Buy the gear you need but don't think you need all the expensive gadgets and expensive guns. Just be sure you have what you need before heading out into the woods.

- Start small with smaller game. This is great for the beginner as there are a lot more opportunities to get in that first successful hunt and it will give you a taste of what hunting is really like before you step into the big leagues. It's better to find out if hunting is not for you after shooting a squirrel or rabbit than by taking down a huge buck.

Above all, learn and practice your woodcraft skills. Learn stealth and navigation in the woods. Learn your weapon. Practice and more practice is what it takes. Be safe and have fun!

Team Obama edits to Benghazi talking points: the smoking gun?

The White House refused to concede on Friday that the administration's edits to a set of 'talking points' about deadly attacks on a US compound in Benghazi, Libya, were more than cosmetic. That is debatable.?

By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / May 10, 2013

White House spokesman Jay Carney speaks during a news conference at the White House in Washington, Friday. The Obama administration denied Republican accusations of a cover-up in last year's deadly attack in Libya, moving on Friday to defuse a renewed political controversy after a news report said memos on the incident were edited to omit references to a CIA warning of an al Qaeda threat.

Top State Department officials pushed for edits in the talking points used by UN Ambassador Susan Rice in the aftermath of last September?s deadly attacks on a US compound in Benghazi, Libya.

In particular, State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland objected to a paragraph detailing previous CIA warnings that extremists linked to Al Qaeda were active in the area, according to internal administration e-mails on the subject obtained by ABC News.

She thought this might reflect a CIA attempt to protect itself at the expense of State. In addition, it ?could be abused by members [of Congress] to beat up the State Department for not paying attention to warnings, so why would we want to feed that either?? wrote Ms. Nuland.

Why is this important? It?s important because the White House has long denied that administration officials made anything other than cosmetic changes to those talking points.

Reporters hammered White House spokesman Jay Carney on this question Friday, asking whether that assertion still stood. Mr. Carney insisted that it did ? that the changes had ultimately been made by the CIA, not the White House or State Department.

The CIA made those alterations after an interagency process, in which many arms of the government got to weigh in, said Carney.

?There is always a deliberative process,? said the White House spokesman.

The CIA?s initial draft of the talking points almost made a reference to a possible link to the Islamic extremist group Ansar al-Sharia. That didn?t make it into the final product.

?The talking points were focused on what we knew ... [and] as we learned more we provided it,? said Carney.

This latest flap is sure to feed continued news coverage of the Benghazi controversy. Republicans have accused the administration of initially covering up a link to terrorism in the attack and then downplaying that link throughout the 2012 campaign lest its record against Al Qaeda be called into question.

The GOP has aimed in particular at then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, with many Republicans charging that Benghazi and its aftermath should disqualify her from becoming president of the United States.

Saudi stock market regulator caps first-day price volatility

DUBAI, May 12 (Reuters) - The Saudi Capital Market Authority

(CMA) announced on Sunday that stocks on the kingdom's bourse

would be limited to price swings of 10 percent on their first

day of trade.

Saudi Arabia, home to the Gulf Arab region's largest stock

exchange, has been slowly amending its regulatory framework to

bring it closer to international standards; market participants

hope this will allow the bourse to open to direct investment by

foreigners, a step which authorities are considering.

Mohammed bin Abdulmalik Al al-Sheikh, head of the CMA, said

last week that the regulator was trying to limit "high levels of

speculation" in the stock market.

Until now, firms debuting on the Tadawul had unrestricted

price movement on their first day of trading, meaning shares

often soared before falling back later.

When National Medical Care Co listed on March 13,

it traded up intra-day to a high of 200 riyals ($53.33) from its

initial public offer price of 27 riyals, before ending its first

day at 122 riyals. By March 31, the share slid to 72 riyals.

The new limit on first-day price moves is "part of the CMA's

regulatory responsibility to regulate and develop the capital

market and protect citizens and investors", the CMA said.

Saudi Arabia has used IPOs to distribute stakes in

government companies at vastly deflated prices - often 10 riyals

a share - as part of efforts to share the country's oil wealth

with ordinary citizens.

PFT: Saints sign first-round pick Vaccaro

william campbell gettyGetty Images

Sixth-round pick Will Campbell, who is making the transition from collegiate defensive tackle to professional offensive guard in his rookie NFL season,?has signed a four-year contract with the Jets, agent Buddy Baker said Friday morning on Twitter.

Campbell (6-4, 311) started 11 games at defensive tackle for Michigan in 2012 but also saw some time along the offensive line earlier in his career.

At the conclusion of the draft, Jets director of college scouting Jeff Bauer relayed the story of how the team came to view Campbell as a guard, crediting some insight from the Michigan coaching staff as a key piece of information. Bauer also noted that Brandon Moore, a long-time starter for the Jets, was a defensive tackle at Illinois before changing positions.

?Well, when I went in this fall, [Campbell] was a defensive tackle there,? Bauer said, according to the club. ?As I was visiting with the coaches there, one of the coaches said, ?You see him as a defensive tackle, he?s a big guy, plays hard, he?s physical. He?s not the most gifted pass rusher, not a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage.? He said, ?You know, this guy really is going to do best as an offensive guard.? And that stuck with me when I went for the fall visit.

?. . .?We sent our offensive line coach, Mike Devlin, out to work him out and Mike loved him. Smart kid, worked hard, and we really thought he was going to be a good fit.?

NVIDIA Q1 earnings: $77.9 million profit on $954 million in revenue

NVIDIA's balance sheet may not look as appealing as it did just a quarter ago, but the company nonetheless managed to beat the consensus expectations and its stock is now climbing in after-hours trading. Profit for NVIDIA's fiscal Q1 2014 rang in at $77.9 million, which is a 55 percent decrease from the previous quarter, but still 29 percent higher than what it netted in Q1 of last year. It's a similar story for revenue: the company reported sales of $954.7 million, down 13 percent from the previous quarter, but up slightly from Q1 2013. Even beyond beating Wall Street's expectations, NVIDIA is giving investors two other reasons to smile: the success of Kepler has led to record margins of 54.3 percent, and the company will return over $1 billion during the year by way of stock repurchases and dividend payments. As for where it's headed? NVIDIA is looking to return to growth as the year progresses, thanks to a little something called the Tegra 4.
