Ayala unveils gardens for the sky in Manila - Property Report

Ayala has several developments in the works for Manila and have emphasized a commitment to green projects.

Filipino property company Ayala Land unveiled a vertical garden-inspired residential development at the heart of Ayala Center in Makati. The condominium project is estimated to bring in PHP7 billion (US$171 million) worth of additional inventory into the local property market, Inquirer Business reported.

The 54-storey first tower of Garden Towers has been selling briskly with a third of 340 available residential units sold on the first day of its introduction to the market, said Ayala Land Premier head, Jose Juan Jugo.

?With its unique garden feature, the newest property ? which notched a total sales of PHP2.1 billion (US$51.5 million) worth of residential units in one day ? aims to become the living, breathing space amid the urban dimensions present in this highly-cosmopolitan location,? Jugo said. ?Based on a conservative estimate the company may be able to sell all units in Garden Towers first tower in 15-18 months, but if the market does not change, it could be a lot faster.?

Once a bloc of units is sold, typically around 80 percent, Ayala Land will be ready to launch the second phase of Garden Towers.? Jugo added the company is ready to begin the second the tower.

Jugo added that this project was a symbol of Ayala Land?s commitment to incorporating greens in its integrated mixed-use hubs across the country. Featuring pockets of greenery or ?sky gardens? that will be laid every two floors on the plan.

Ayala Land invested nearly PHP3 billion (US$73.5 million) to construct Garden Towers? tower 1, which will be turned over to buyers in the first quarter of 2019.? The units are priced at PHP10.3 million (US$252,327) for the smallest one-bedroom units to as high as PHP142.9 million (US$ 3.5 million) for the penthouse units.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini review: a small Galaxy with few stars

Samsung Galaxy S III mini review: a small Galaxy with few stars

Samsung made a bold move when it announced the Galaxy S III mini. Here was an Android phone with the potential to take the iPhone 5 head-on. While the original Galaxy S III is clearly the flagship, its 4.8-inch display means it's literally too much for some people to handle. By matching Apple's screen size inch for inch, it could have been pitched as a device aimed at winning over some iOS fence-sitters. However, when you look at the specifications: a dual-core 1GHz processor, WVGA (800 x 480) display and a 5-megapixel camera, it's clear that Samsung had other ideas, opting to fish for a more mid-range customer instead.

Fast forward to the present, and it's no longer a matter of intellectual debate as to what the mini is all about: the phone is here, and on sale in much of Europe for £299 / €379. So hubris, brand appeal and pundit talk aside, is this the real-deal Galaxy S III, just for smaller hands? Or is it a budget phone simply wearing its elder sibling's tuxedo to the ball? We spent some time getting to know the phone in an attempt to find out.

(AP) ? The convertible hit Phillip Moreno so hard that it knocked him out of his shoes and lodged him in the windshield.

As he lay dying on the hood, police said, Sherri Lynn Wilkins kept going another two miles until other motorists swarmed her car at a traffic light and grabbed her keys.

Wilkins, who was charged Tuesday with murder and driving drunk, told police she struck the man after leaving work and panicked. Police said her blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

Her arrest on a street corner between home and her job as a drug and alcohol counselor seemed to be a return to a dark past that Wilkins once celebrated leaving behind. The convict and recovering addict had recently gone back to school, gotten a job and was reuniting with her family, including a new grandchild.

"It's a really tragic situation for both parties," said her neighbor, Crystal Witherspoon. "I'm trying to understand it myself, because from what I knew of her, she was a kind-hearted person. She was trying very hard."

Tami Jimenez, a recovering alcoholic who worked with Wilkins, said the case serves as a bitter reminder for all addicts about the dangers of relapse.

"I'm headed for a meeting tonight," she said. "It's unfortunate and it's tragic and it's sad, but it's a reminder that the disease of addiction can take you out at any time."

Wilkins' arraignment was postponed until next month at a brief court hearing Tuesday. She was ordered held on $2.25 million bail.

Twenty members of Moreno's extended family attended the hearing and spoke afterward of the fun-loving man who adored the Lakers and the Raiders and was a whiz at remembering sports statistics. Moreno was nicknamed "Chud" because of his love of Budweiser beer and spent his last day watching college football with friends.

"We thank the citizens who stopped Wilkins and gave him some peace in his waning moments," family attorney Kevin Danesh said outside court. "Anyone who would dare to drink and drive, let this be a lesson to them."

Danesh said the family is also seeking answers about where Wilkins was before the accident. Her boss has said it was unlikely she was coming from work, as she told police, so late on a Saturday.

Moreno had three beers at a bar called The Branch Office just a half-block from the accident scene on Saturday and left around 11 p.m. to walk home, said bartender Virginia Zarate. Less than an hour later, police swarmed the streets, tracing their way back to the initial impact, she said.

"We started seeing a bunch of lights and we went out, and the cops said it was a hit-and-run, but we had no clue who it was," she said as a memorial of balloons, flowers and candles sprouted up down the street.

Wilkins' arrest shocked friends, who said she was working to rebuild her life after a criminal record stretching back more than 20 years.

She attended Loyola Marymount University, where she was enrolled in an alcohol and drug counseling certification program and was hired by Twin Town Treatment Centers a year ago to work with other addicts in a group setting, said David Lisonbee, the company CEO.

She ran evening sessions at the Torrance location and consistently received high marks on evaluations by patients, he said. Wilkins often stayed late to meet one-on-one with patients who were struggling and helped one client with homework assignments after realizing he couldn't read, Jimenez said.

"We've gotten some calls from people saying, 'She really saved my life,'" Jimenez said. "Everybody loved Sherri, the employees, the patients, just everybody loved her."

Most recently, Wilkins was thrilled with the birth of her granddaughter ? her first grandchild ? but struggled with ankle pain from an accident and was considering surgery to fix the problem, Jimenez said.

On her Myspace profile, Wilkins noted that she had been drug-free for 11 years, was a Buddhist and was planning trips to Chicago to see her daughter, a medical intern, and to Hawaii.

"I used to be into drugs very heavy, with that came terrible choices, the loss of all my family and freedom. Today four of my children are in my life," Wilkins wrote.

Lisonbee, her boss, confirmed the woman in the Myspace profile was Wilkins.

Court records show Wilkins was convicted of first-degree burglary in 1989 and a month later of having narcotics while in custody. In 1994, she was convicted along with a co-defendant on one count of burglary and given nine years in prison.

In 2001, Wilkins was convicted of having a controlled substance into a jail or a prison, said Luis Patino, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections.

Prison records show she was paroled in 2008, he said.

Two years later, Wilkins was arrested for hit-and-run after she knocked over a power pole that was then hit by three other cars, said Assistant City Attorney Patrick Sullivan.

She had no alcohol or drugs in her system, however, and the case was dismissed when she and the owners of other vehicles reached an agreement, he said.

Build Your Own Arduino-Powered Bicycle Lights, Turn Signals, and Odometer for Safe Night Riding

Build Your Own Arduino-Powered Bicycle Lights, Turn Signals, and Odometer for Safe Night RidingBuild Your Own Arduino-Powered Bicycle Lights, Turn Signals, and Odometer for Safe Night Riding Riding a bicycle at night is a bit dangerous, but electronics blogger Jenna DeBoisblanc shows off how to build a system that includes turn signals, a strobe light, speedometer, and brake lights to keep you safe.

The entire system is built on the backbone of an Arduino Uno with a few other parts totaling at about $150. That seems expensive, but DeBoisblanc's build covers a lot of ground. You not only get safety-centric features like turn signals and brake lights, you also get a handy speedometer and odometer so you always know how far you travelled. You can find the full guide, including videos, schematics, and code, over on DeBoisblanc's blog.

Top Romney Adviser Brags About Losing Poor, Minority Voters To Obama

Mitt Romney can take some solace in his devastating loss on Nov. 6: at least he won the voters who really count.

That's the thesis anyway of top adviser Stuart Stevens, who penned an op-ed in the Washington Post on Wednesday arguing that by winning wealthier and whiter voters, Romney secured the moral victory over Obama.

"On Nov. 6, Mitt Romney carried the majority of every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income," Stevens wrote. "That means he carried the majority of middle-class voters. While John McCain lost white voters under 30 by 10 points, Romney won those voters by seven points, a 17-point shift."

According to Stevens, "The Republican Party has problems, but as we go forward, let's remember that any party that captures the majority of the middle class must be doing something right." As a result, "Republican ideals -- Mitt Romney -- carried the day."

The argument that poorer voters are inherently inferior seems to undercut the campaign's central message over the last two years: that Romney's top concern was providing jobs for the jobless. The unemployed Americans Romney highlighted in ads, speeches and photo-ops make under $50,000 a year almost by definition and campaign videos like the one below are jarring next to Stevens' latest piece.

Stevens notably never mentioned jobs and unemployment in his op-ed, instead focusing on how Romney championed "the moral case for free enterprise and conservative economics."

Unfortunately for Romney, poor and minority votes counted just the same as the allegedly superior votes Stevens favored. The result was an electoral college blowout for the president powered by strong turnout and margins among young voters, Latinos, African Americans, and women.

But Stevens had an explanation for that, too. Obama was "a charismatic African American president with a billion dollars, no primary and a media that often felt morally conflicted about being critical. How easy is that to replicate?"

US rabbi says jailed American in good health

In this photo released by Finlay Military Hospital, jailed American Alan Gross, center, holds a sign as he poses for a photo with Rabbi Elie Abadie, right, and U.S. lawyer James L.Berenthal at the Finlay military hospital in Havana, Cuba, Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. (AP Photo/Finlay Military Hospital)

(AP) ? A prominent New York rabbi and physician visited an American subcontractor serving a long jail term in Cuba and said the man is in good health, despite his family's concerns about a growth on his right shoulder.

Rabbi Elie Abadie, who is also a gastroenterologist, told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview following Tuesday's 2 1/2-hour visit at a military hospital in Havana that he personally examined Alan Gross and received a lengthy briefing from a team of Cuban physicians who have attended him.

He said the 1 1/2- inch growth on Gross's shoulder appeared to be a non-cancerous hematoma that should clear up by itself, adding that the American no longer wants Cuban doctors to conduct a biopsy.

"Alan Gross does not have any cancerous growth at this time, at least based on the studies I was shown and based on the examination, and I think he understands that also," Abadie said.

Abadie said the hematoma, basically internal bleeding linked to the rupture of muscle fiber, was likely caused by exercise Gross does in jail. He said the growth ought to eventually disappear on its own.

Gross's plight has put already chilly relations between Cuba and the United States in a deep freeze. The Maryland native was arrested in December 2009 while on a USAID-funded democracy building program and later sentenced to 15 years in jail for crimes against the state.

He claims he was only trying to help the island's small Jewish community gain Internet access.

Gross's health has been an ongoing issue during his incarceration. The 63-year-old, who was obese when arrested, has lost more than 100 pounds while in jail.

Abadie, a rabbi at New York's Edmund J. Safra Synagogue, said Gross's weight is appropriate for a man his age and height.

Photos that Abadie and a colleague provided to AP of Tuesday's meeting with Gross showed him looking thin, but generally appearing to be in good spirits.

In one photo, Gross holds up a handwritten note that says "Hi Mom."

Gross's family has repeatedly appealed for his release on humanitarian grounds, noting his health problems and the fact that his adult daughter and elderly mother have both been battling cancer. Gross and his wife recently filed a $60 million lawsuit against his former Maryland employer and the United States government, saying they didn't adequately train him or disclose risks he was undertaking by doing development work on the Communist-run island.

They filed another lawsuit against an insurance company they say has reneged on commitments to pay compensation in case of his wrongful detention.

Separately, a lawyer for Gross has written the United Nations' anti-torture expert, saying Cuban officials' treatment of his client "will surely amount to torture" if he continues to be denied medical care.

Rumors have been swirling in U.S. media that Cuba might soon release Gross as a gesture of good will or in the hopes of winning concessions from the administration of President Barack Obama, but Abadie said that those reports appeared to be false.

"As far as I know there is no truth to it," he said.

Abadie said he met with senior Cuban officials who expressed their desire to resolve the case "as quickly as possible," but would not say specifically who he spoke with or what they offered.

"They claim that they are more than willing to sit at the table," he said.

Cuban officials have strongly implied they hope to trade Gross for five Cuban agents sentenced to long jail terms in the United States, one of whom is already free on bail.

Abadie said Gross made clear that he does not want his case linked to that of the agents, known in Cuba as "The Five Heroes," because he does not believe he is guilty of espionage.

But Abadie said Gross is hoping for a "constructive and productive" dialogue between U.S. and Cuban officials to resolve his case.

Bankruptcy Court Warns on WARN

Judge Martin Glenn of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York recently dismissed a putative class action complaint filed on behalf of former employees of MF Global that alleged the chapter 11 trustee for MF Global Holdings Ltd. and certain of its subsidiaries and the SIPA trustee for MF Global Inc. failed to provide sufficient notice under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (the ?WARN Act?) and the New York version of the WARN Act prior to terminating such employees.? In its memorandum opinion and order, the bankruptcy court considered whether the SIPA trustee and chapter 11 trustee were ?employers? for purposes of the WARN Act and the NY WARN Act or ?liquidating fiduciaries? who are excepted from the obligation to comply with advance notice requirements under the WARN statutes, in which case the actions of the trustees would be protected.

On October 31, 2011, pursuant to the Securities Investor Protection Act, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York entered the order commencing the liquidation of MF Global Inc., the U.S. broker-dealer arm of the MF Global enterprise, and appointed James W. Giddens as the SIPA trustee.? (Under SIPA section 78eee, upon the grant by the district court of the ?protective decree? and the appointment of the SIPA trustee, the liquidation proceeding is removed to the bankruptcy court.)? SIPA section 78fff(a), among other things, requires a SIPA trustee to liquidate the broker-dealer business.? That same day, the broker-dealer?s parent company, MF Global Holdings Ltd., and its affiliated financing company, MF Global Finance USA Inc., filed voluntary chapter 11 petitions.? Approximately two weeks later, on November 11, 2011, the putative class members were dismissed from their employment.? On November 21, 2011, the debtors and the statutory creditors? committee filed a joint emergency motion seeking the appointment of a chapter 11 trustee, which the court granted a week later.

The only purpose of the SIPA proceeding for the MF broker-dealer (which employed the bulk of the terminated MF employees) could be liquidation.? The stated purpose of the chapter 11 filings, however, was less clear. ?Although the first day affidavit and the statements at the first day hearing indicated that the MF Global chapter 11 cases were filed with the hope of reorganizing, these statements conflicted with those made in the emergency motion seeking the appointment of a chapter 11 trustee ?to reorganize and/or liquidate the [d]ebtors? assets for the benefit of the . . . estates,? which also stated that ?[t]he primary objective for the duration of the chapter 11 cases is the orderly wind-down of the [d]ebtors? various assets.?? The bankruptcy court observed, ?With the appointment of the Chapter 11 Trustee on November 28, 2011, it became clear that the only possible outcome for the chapter 11 [d]ebtors was liquidation.? But between October 31, 2011 and November 22, 2011, there is nothing in the record to establish that the chapter 11 [d]ebtors intended to liquidate.?

Having established the differing original objectives of the SIPA proceeding and the chapter 11 cases, Judge Glenn then considered whether the trustees were ?employers? for the purposes of the WARN statutes.? Both trustees relied upon the preamble to the explanatory WARN Act Regulations issued by the Secretary of the Department of Labor to exclude themselves from the definition of ?employer.?? As a matter of law, the bankruptcy court concluded that the MF broker-dealer was liquidating when the layoffs occurred because the SIPA trustee was empowered by law only to liquidate the business, and as such, the SIPA trustee was a ?liquidating fiduciary? and did not fall within the definition of ?employer.?? Accordingly, the SIPA trustee was excepted from the obligation to comply with the advance notice requirements under the WARN statutes.

Although the bankruptcy court also granted the chapter 11 trustee?s motion to dismiss, it did so without prejudice and without basing its decision on the ?liquidating fiduciary? principle.? Unlike the SIPA trustee?s motion to dismiss, disputed issues of fact existed with respect to the chapter 11 debtors.? Moreover, the class action complaint itself did not allege whether the debtors were seeking to reorganize or to liquidate.? Having concluded that the allegations in the complaint were deficient, the court granted the chapter 11 trustee?s motion to dismiss, but also granted the putative class representatives leave to amend their complaint within thirty days.? The bankruptcy court noted, however, that any subsequent amendment of the complaint would not preclude the court from dismissing the amended complaint based on the ?liquidating fiduciary? principle.

Thielmann reminds (or perhaps warns) debtors and their professionals that the interplay between the Bankruptcy Code and various federal and state statutes can be complicated and often ill-defined.? Moreover, what may appear to be innocuous, generic statements made in first day pleadings may have implications later.?? Unless a debtor-entity is excepted from the definition of ?employer? pursuant to the WARN statutes, a debtor (or its trustee) is warned to WARN.

Disclosure:? Although Weil is not involved in the WARN litigation, we represent the Administrators in certain of the proceedings relating to MF Global?s UK subsidiaries, including its UK broker-dealer.

Record Powerball result of changes to boost sales

Powerball organizers say this is the first run-up to a large jackpot that's fallen over a major holiday. (AP Photo/The Record (Bergen County), Don Smith)

(AP) ? The historic Powerball jackpot boosted to $500 million on Tuesday was all part of a plan lottery officials put in place early this year to build jackpots faster, drive sales and generate more money for states that run the game.

Their plan appears to be working.

Powerball tickets doubled in price in January to $2, and while the number of tickets sold initially dropped, sales revenue has increased by about 35 percent over 2011.

Sales for Powerball reached a record $3.96 billion in fiscal 2012 and are expected to reach $5 billion this year, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Des Moines, Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association, the group that runs the Powerball game.

There has been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6, and the jackpot already has reached a record level for the game. It was first posted at $425 million but revised upward to $500 million when brisk sales increased the payout. It's the second highest jackpot in lottery history, behind only the $656 million Mega Millions prize in March.

It took nine weeks for the Mega Millions jackpot to get that high, before three winners ? from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland ? hit the right numbers, each collecting $218.6 million for their share of the split.

With soaring jackpots come soaring sales, and for the states playing the game, that means higher revenue.

"The purpose for the lottery is to generate revenue for the respective states and their beneficiary programs," said Norm Lingle, chairman of the Powerball Game Group. "High jackpots certainly help the lottery achieve those goals."

Of the $2 cost of a Powerball ticket, $1 goes to the prizes and the other dollar is kept by the state lottery organization, said Lingle, who also is executive director of the South Dakota Lottery. After administrative overhead is paid, the remaining amount goes to that state's beneficiary programs.

Some states designate specific expenditures such as education, while others deposit the money in their general fund to help supplement tax revenue.

The federal government keeps 25 percent of the jackpot for federal taxes.

Most states withhold between 5 percent and 7 percent. A New York City winner would pay more than 12 percent since the state takes 8.97 percent and the city keeps 3.6 percent.

Powerball and Mega Millions games are seeing jackpots grow faster and higher in part because the states that play both games agreed in 2010 to sell to one another.

Both games are now played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands. The larger pool of players means jackpots roll over to higher numbers faster, which tends to increase the buzz about the jackpots which increases sales. It all can result in higher jackpots sooner.

"It really happened with both of these games became national games," said Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery.

Still, just seven of the top 25 jackpots occurred after January 2010 when the cross-selling began. That just points to the unpredictability of games of chance like lotteries. It still comes down to the luck of the numbers, Rich said.

It has been proven that once the jackpot reaches a certain threshold more players buy.

The Quick Shop in Ottumwa, Iowa, is one of the state's highest-volume lottery ticket sellers due to its location across the street from a John Deere farm implement factory.

"It's picking up by the minute," said store owner Mark Ebelsheiser. "We're selling probably 60 to 70 percent more than normal. When it gets up this high they really come out and get them."

Bob Allison, a retired Indian Hills Community College instructor and administrator, buys tickets weekly for a group of people at the college in Ottumwa. On Tuesday he and two golfing and fishing buddies went in together to buy additional tickets. Allison said he usually buys a few additional tickets when the jackpot gets so high.

He said he'd make a lot of people very happy if he won.

"My kids would probably retire quick," said the father of three daughters.

Between $20 and $30 million in tickets were sold between Wednesday and Saturday drawings for most of October. Once the jackpot hit $100 million on Oct. 27, nearly $38 million worth of tickets were sold by Oct. 31. As the jackpot grew to more than $200 million on Nov. 17, sales surged by nearly $70 million by the next Wednesday. Then the jackpot reached over $300 million on Nov. 24 and ticket sales over the next four days surpassed $140 million.

"Somewhere around $100 million those occasional players seem to come back into the stores in droves," said Rich, the Iowa Lottery CEO. The lottery also notices a significant increase in workers and other groups joining together in pools to combine resources to buy numbers, he said.

Trina Small, manager at the convenience store in Bondurant, Iowa, where a couple bought a $202 million ticket on Sept. 26, said sales have been heavy. She said Monday night Powerball sales were at about $800, at least $200 more than normal. She expects Tuesday and Wednesday sales to be even more.

"It's kind of like Black Friday all over again," she said.

Small doesn't usually play the lottery herself but said she may buy a chance at the record jackpot. She's just trying to decide if her chances are better buying it elsewhere since a jackpot ticket was sold at her store just two months ago ? the old adage about lightning striking twice.

"The odds are against you anyway but I'm pretty sure they're more against you getting one from this store," she joked.

Powerball has posted sales exceeding $714 million in the current jackpot run since early October and it's possible more than $1 billion in tickets will have been sold by the end of Wednesday when the next drawing is held.

A single winner choosing the cash option would take home more than $327 million before taxes.

Strutt said the chance of getting a winner this Wednesday is approaching 60 percent.

Your Best Defense Against Relapse while Fighting Addiction

Yesterday we looked at the optimal timeline of success in addiction recovery. Today we want to look at what your best defense is against relapse while you are fighting addiction or alcoholism.

In my experience the best defense against relapse in recovery starts with a strong foundation of sobriety. For me this meant that I had to go to inpatient rehab. I had tried in the past to get clean and sober without going to treatment and it had never worked for me (for example, I attended counseling on an outpatient basis but continued to self medicate).

Early recovery and inpatient rehab

One of the most obvious principles that come into play with inpatient rehab is that you get an ?early win? no matter what. For the time that you are in treatment, you stay clean and sober without much effort. This is exactly one half of the entire point of inpatient treatment. The other half is that they attempt to teach you relapse prevention in some form or another?whether that is a 12 step program, a religious based approach, or whatever. But most folks who are experienced in treating addiction agree that inpatient rehab is the best way to start.

When you go to inpatient rehab you start building a foundation. First of all you stay clean and sober while you are in the facility as it is a tightly controlled environment. Second of all they attempt to educate you as to how you might stay clean and sober once you leave rehab and are back on your own again. Both of these things are attempting to build a foundation for you in early recovery.

I went to short term rehab twice and immediately relapsed upon leaving. Therefore I figured out at some point (based on what the counselors were telling me as well) that I needed long term treatment. This may not be the case for everyone but it was definitely the case for me. I needed more help than what 28 days or less could provide for me. Instead of a one month long foundation in recovery I needed a two year long foundation in recovery. Looking back this was the best decision I ever made?to live in long term rehab. Not everyone will need this but if you repeatedly fail after attending short term rehab (like I did) then you might consider it at some point.

There are very few effective alternatives to inpatient rehab. How else might you build a foundation in early recovery? You could try to detox yourself (unsafe in many cases) or you might just try to attend 12 step meetings every day (not reliable or consistent enough). None of the possible alternatives are nearly as effective as actually staying at an inpatient facility for several days or weeks. This is not to say that inpatient rehab is the only thing that could possibly work, it just means that inpatient rehab is likely to build the strongest foundation for you.

Living recovery and finding support when you leave rehab

How many people do you think leave inpatient rehab, only to relapse and fall flat on their face almost immediately?

The numbers on this are staggering. It is so intimidating that it might almost seem like going to inpatient rehab is not worth it at all.

But you have to remember what treatment is: a foundation. Without it your recovery will be much more difficult. But just having built this foundation does not mean that you are home free. Not by a long shot. In fact, the real test in recovery begins when you first leave the safe environment that inpatient provides and have to make decisions on your own suddenly. This is your first real test in recovery. In comparison, being in inpatient treatment for 28 days is a walk in the park.

This is why they encourage you to find and use support while you are in treatment. For example, they will typically suggest that upon leaving treatment you:

* Attend 12 step meetings every single day.
* Follow up with either counseling or outpatient treatment on a regular and consistent basis.
* Get phone numbers of your peers in recovery so that you can call on them for support or in times of trouble.

Obviously support is important in early recovery. If you leave out of inpatient rehab and you have formed no new contacts with people in recovery then it will be very difficult to maintain sobriety.

They say that in recovery you ?only have to change one thing, and that is EVERYTHING.? This cliche is undoubtedly true, and anyone who has made the transition into successful recovery can look back say ?yes, that is accurate?.I really did change everything!?

This changing starts with people and support. Before you came to rehab you obviously had zero support in terms of recovery. You were not associating with healthy people in recovery at that time. Now that you have been detoxed and left inpatient rehab you need to start associating with ?the right people? every single day.

The easiest way to do this is to immerse yourself in AA or NA meetings. When I say ?immerse yourself? what I mean is:

* Attend a meeting every single day no matter what, and possible more than one meeting if you feel it necessary.
* Get involved with your peers in the 12 step program and start spending time with them outside of the meetings.
* Find a sponsor quickly in recovery and start talking with them every single day and start working through the steps with that person immediately.

If you just want to do one of these things but not the others then I believe you are missing the point. You want ?full immersion? in this new life of recovery and so therefore you need to go all out when pursuing recovery. Don?t hold back. Put a 100 percent effort into this.

Now you may also note that I do not normally advocate for strong 12 step involvement on this website. My philosophy of recovery does not generally depend on programs, meetings, or sponsors. However, I think it is important to realize how crucial the timing is in all of this. If you are in your first 2 years of recovery (approximately) then you need all of the help and support that you can get. Keep in mind that I actually had a lot MORE support during the first two years than what I describe here. I was living in rehab for two years, attending meetings, having a sponsor, etc. Later on in my recovery I reduced these dependencies (on outside support) and found a way to depend more on myself for my recovery efforts. But I think it is important to recognize the need for support in early recovery.

Tactics versus strategy in recovery

Most of the suggestions listed above are tactical in nature. Go to meetings. Get a sponsor.

The overall strategy that dictates those actions is essentially: ?Immerse yourself fully in recovery.?

You can follow a strategy without necessarily knowing all of the tactics. So long as you know what your strategy is (live and breathe recovery every moment of every day) then you can sort of ?fill in the gaps? as you go along and figure out which tactics will plug into your life.

I think it is important to think about strategy much more than what is typically taught in addiction recovery. If you go to a dozen 12 step meetings you will probably hear people talk about tactical approaches 99 percent of the time. Maybe 1 percent of the information you hear will be a suggestion that speaks of strategy in recovery.

Your strategy is important because it dictates your long term outcomes. Your strategy tells you WHY you are going to meetings, not just that you need to go to meetings. Therefore it is more powerful than blindly following suggestions that people give you.

I took issue with this in early recovery because people were basically telling me to ignore strategy. They were saying ?stop thinking so hard about this recovery thing and just do what you are told to do! You will only screw it up if you try to over think it!? Indeed, strategic thinking is discouraged in early recovery. ?Don?t drink and go to meetings.? I was told many times that I should ?not try to figure this recovery thing out,? but to ?just do it and have faith.?

This approach may be good enough for some people, but it did not sit well with me. Basically what I was told was that I should blindly use the tactics I was being given (go to meetings, get a sponsor, etc.) but not WHY I was using those tactics (the overall guiding strategy of recovery). Sure, people could give their opinion as to the ?why? we used certain tactics in recovery, but no one could tie it all together with a unifying strategy that made sense.

There are some advantages to this: Early recovery benefits greatly from a tactical approach rather than a strategic approach. The old timers were basically right: Shut up and do what you are told! This works well in early recovery because addicts and alcoholics tend to over think and complicate things if left to their own devices.

The problem comes in when you have this mentality of ?shut and follow our directions? that is extending into long term recovery. If you have 4 years or more of sobriety and you cannot improvise and think on your own two feet in life then something is wrong. If you need a sponsor to get through a craving or trigger situation after several years of recovery then something is wrong. So really what I am cautioning about here is the long term reliance on tactics.

You should not be relying on tactics in long term recovery. Instead you should develop a recovery strategy that is flexible and resilient enough to keep you clean and sober for the rest of your life. You don?t get such a strategy by simply following directions and taking orders blindly.

At some point, you have to transition into long term recovery. There are people in ?the program? who refuse to do this. They want to ?stick to the basics? and rely on a tactical approach to recovery forever. This is the weaker path.

The stronger path is to develop your own recovery strategy. Find the tactics that work for you and then fit them into a framework that makes sense. Test your conclusion by experimenting and pursuing more growth and learning. Refine your strategy as you use it to guide yourself in recovery.

How to develop your own recovery strategy

Begin with foundation knowledge. Early recovery is not the time for deep thinking. Attend treatment and take advice, follow orders, do what you are told. This is not to punish yourself or belittle yourself in any way. You are simply learning the basics of discipline and self control in a totally new way. Allow yourself to do this. Let go of the need for control. You can even let go of the idea that you want to develop your own recovery strategy.

You don?t need a recovery strategy in early sobriety, you need to follow orders. I know that sounds harsh but it is the truth. If you could get away without having to take some direction then you would not be in trouble in the first place. Suck it up and do what the counselors, therapists, and sponsors suggest in early recovery. Build your foundation.

Your strategy in recovery will build on this foundation of action. In early recovery you will do things that are suggested to you. Some of these things will be highly effective for you and other things will not do much for you. For example, I had suggestions in my early recovery to both exercise and meditate. I tried both. Eventually I became a regular jogger and looking back I can see that this replaces and fulfills the ?meditation requirement.? I could not have known this going into recovery, but instead had to discover it after taking suggestions and experimenting.

When I say that you should ?take orders in early recovery? I am not saying that you become a doormat. What I am saying is that you take action and try new things, new ideas that come from other people. This is critical. As you do this you will keep the effective actions and discard the useless ones.

After you do this for a few months or years (take suggestions and experiment with new ideas) you will slowly start to develop your own recovery strategy.

It may be the case that everyone?s recovery strategy is the same; I am not actually sure on this yet. I just know that my personal strategy is to ?pursue health and personal growth.? I want to be as healthy as possible and also become the best person that I can be. This is what my strategy has become and because I have taken the time to so thoroughly refine this strategy I no longer need to think or worry about individual tactics.

Your best defense against relapse is personal growth

Your best defense against relapse in the long run is a strategy of personal growth.

As I said this might not be the exact strategy for everyone but I believe most people will have to have some element of learning and growth in their long term strategy for recovery.

Having a strategy of personal growth means that you:

* Will always be willing and eager to learn more about yourself and what you might be able to improve in your life.
* Will always be building self esteem based on personal achievement and growth (this is huge for protecting against relapse).
* Will be reducing stress and building more contentment into life by making constant incremental improvements in the way that you live and do things.
* Will be healthier and happier in the long run based on a strategy that equates personal growth with improved health. This fits in with the holistic health approach as well and being aware of health in all areas of your life.

Anyone who ignores such a strategy of personal growth and holistic health is likely to stray into dangerous territory. They will essentially be relying on tactics to get them to do the right thing rather than being able to use these principles to guide them.

Keep in mind that this is a long term strategy in recovery. You can use these concepts to help dictate your actions in the short run, but the long term effects are what motivate your decisions in most cases. This is why you will intuitively want to quit smoking cigarettes some day in recovery?because you know it is the right thing to do for your long term health in recovery. The same strategy can lead you to physical exercise, meditation, or whatever seems to work well for you in terms of increasing your health.

Long term recovery never ends ? how to fight complacency

People who relapse in long term sobriety do so only after becoming complacent. They get lazy. They stop growing and learning.

Therefore your long term strategy should include the ideas of continuous learning and continuous growth. Thus you can naturally prevent relapse in your journey by being aware of complacency and taking a pro-active strategy against it. Anyone might become lazy in recovery but if you plan for it and intend to keep yourself motivated to make new growth on a regular basis then your strategy can help protect you from this threat.

I do this by taking on ?growth projects? and attempting to push myself to learn and try new things. This is not as easy as it might sound. Why would you want to leave your comfort zone in recovery if everything seems to be going good for you? Yet this is the sort of risk that you have to take in order to pro-actively fight against complacency. It is only by continuously challenging yourself that you can make new growth in your life. You don?t reach new milestones in life by playing it safe and being boring. You have to try new things, learn new things, and take some healthy risks. When I say ?risk? I do not mean trying to jump over canyons with a motorcycle. I am talking about the risk that you feel when you try to learn something totally new and feel that you might look foolish or stupid. I am talking about the risk that you take when you want to explore meditation but know absolutely nothing about it and are afraid to ask people.

In a way this is like returning to the innocence of early recovery. Find a new direction in which you might learn and start asking questions again. Pretend you are new in recovery all over again and find a new path of growth to explore. This can be uncomfortable for people and it can feel like it is a risk. But if you want to keep growing in your recovery and protect yourself from relapse then this is actually the strongest path. It feels weak because you have to make yourself vulnerable at times in order to embrace new ideas and learn new things, but it is actually the strongest approach to long term recovery and continuous growth.

Small business Saturday | WPRI.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - After shoppers flooded store on black Friday, local stores in Rhode Island hope people shop local on small business Saturday.

For 12 years "Frod and Toad" on Hope St. has been selling everything from stationary to souvenirs.

Owner Asher Schofield tell Eyewitness News "People really come out for Small business Saturday. We see a huge jump in business. It's really a great thing. You really get a sense that people want to support their local mom and pop businesses."

According to the Small Business Administration, 100 million people nationwide shopped locally on small buisness Saturday last year.

"Why would we want to support a big store chain, they're going to make it anyway? so very much for the small business owner." said shopper Gail Goodwin-Gomez

Gail said she shopped last year and she plans to shop locally this year too.

"Luniac Glamour" on Main St. in East Greenwich opened just three months ago and is getting ready for it's first small business Saturday. The shop has all things beauty, from bags and jewlrey to hair and a nail salon.

Co-oweners Jaclyn Murphy and Kristen Marrah tell Eyewitness News that everything in their shop is made by Rhode Island designers.

"People who own the businesses are your friends and your family, people that you see on the street.// I think keeping everything local is ideal." says Kristen.

This is the third offical year of small business Saturday.

An Introduction To Disaster Recovery- First Steps In The ...

Disaster recovery (IT) is defined as the set of processes cum policies cum procedures that go into the ?recovering and continuation of technology-related infrastructure that is critical to the basic functioning of an organization in the event of disasters that are natural or deliberate?.

Disaster recovery planning (DRP) comes as part of overall business continuity planning (BCP). It typically includes planning for the resuming of software applications, data, the hardware, network/ communication and all other IT related infrastructure. The general steps that are followed while creating a DRP include:

· Identifying the scope ? the boundaries and limitations for the disaster recovery plan.

· Carrying out a BIA or business impact analysis to assess the possible financial loss if a disaster were to strike

· Getting the buy-in of top management for DRP and investing for the same

· Getting the participation of every team concerned in the planning, training and execution stages

· Implementing the DRP ? to be done by the team dedicated for this

The National Institute of Standards and Technologies has come out with tools which can be used to create effective BCPs/ DRPs.

There are control measures like prevention measures, detection measures and correction measures which are mechanisms that can be used to reduce/ eliminate threats to computer security and safety. It is important for all the procedures and processes to be documented and tested out regularly. Data can be protected by making back ups on tapes or other storage systems and sending them physically/ electronically to off-sites (which are sites away from the place where the current data is ? could be another part of the city or even be another city). UPS, Fire prevention steps, anti-virus, WAN optimization technology ? all this form an important part of a strong business continuity/ disaster recovery process.

The Bounce Imaging Camera Provides Eyes for Emergency Workers

Technology that can save lives is always welcome. The Bounce Imaging ball-shaped camera has the potential to save lives of people in danger, as well as aid the police, firefighters, soldiers, searchers and rescuers following a disaster, or anyone responding to an unknown situation.

The Bounce Imaging camera, approximately tennis-ball size, is a round camera built to withstand and monitor hazardous conditions. It consists of six cameras that send photos to a smartphone or laptop, forming a panoramic shot that shows what is happening for a full 360 degrees.

Bounce Imaging is located in Boston, where the company earned gold winner status, with a $50,000 prize, at the MassChallenge.

??At Bounce Imaging, we are developing low-cost remote imaging and sensing platforms for the first responder community,? David Young, Bounce Imaging co-founder, explained to RESCUECOM. ?Our technology enables these professionals to quickly see inside dangerous, unseen spaces without exposing themselves or their teams to potential harm. Motivation for the idea came from the Haiti earthquake in 2010. After observing the enormous difficulty emergency responders faced in searching thousands of air pockets for victims trapped under the rubble, we knew there had to be a safer, more effective method to see inside these dangerous spaces.?

?The unit is a small, spherical device that, when thrown into a room or space, takes images and other sensory data and wirelessly transmits the data back to the user,? Young added. ?The user sees a series of panoramic photos with accompanying data such as temperature, oxygen, carbon monoxide, etc., depending on the application.? We are currently aiming to have the unit in field trials in early 2013 and expect an initial price-per-unit of approximately $500. Recently, we were included in Time magazine?s `Best Inventions of 2012? issue.?

Data recovery?for innovative devices such as these or for your personal computer data can be a complex issue. That?s why RESCUECOM uses only level 1 RESCUECOM certified technicians to complete data recovery for any business or personal use.

The types of sensors included in various versions of the camera ball depend on the situations it could encounter. Infrared LEDs enable the cameras to get usable photos even in low-lighting conditions.

Responders can consider the device disposable, if necessary.

First responders want to keep their laptops in good condition for times they must monitor photos taken with the Bounce Imaging device. For laptop computer repair, contact a professional computer company, such as RESCUECOM.

Some Massachusetts police officers will test the device before it hits the market.

?Our goal is to provide first responders with a low-cost, fast and easy-to-use solution to a hazardous dilemma they face every day in the line of duty. We are motivated by the impact our product can have and the lives it may potentially save,? Young concluded.

Media.net PPC Advertising Review 2012 - Helping ... - Ask Will Online

When it comes to monetising my website, the first and most obvious choice to go for is Google Adsense. When you say PPC, you say Adsense. However, after using Adsense for around a year now, I feel I could possibly make more money else where with competitors to Adsense. For this reason, I looked at Media.net. Here is my experience with them.

What is Media.net?

Media.net is a contextual advertising company that uses the Yahoo and Bing network to display relevant adverts on websites. Therefore, it can be seen that it is Google vs Yahoo +?Bing. I think this makes clear that it is not a small size advertising company that are rapidly expanding like Ad Dynamo are. Media.net, at only two years old, has already become a huge influence in advertising online.

What Does Media.net Offer?

Before you step into the deep end to try out Media.net, you may want to know what Media.net has up to offer. From my experience, it does seem that Media.net does offer more than most PPC companies:

  • A mentor to help you - When you do sign up for Media.net (which you have to request for and then get accepted), you are allocated a mentor who works for Media.net and helps you with optimising your adverts to increase earnings: something Google has never done.
  • Content related adverts - Media.net scans the content of the page to load up the most relevant adverts. This is the typical contextual advert where the advert is only related to the content.
  • Search related adverts - A new idea to PPC, instead of looking to relate the adverts to the content of your page, the adverts are related to what the web user searched using a search engine to get to your website. Therefore, if your website doesn't satisfy the needs of the web user from their search result, your Media.net advert might instead.
  • New Ad sizes - As well as Media.net having the most common advert sizes for publishers to use, they also have a 600x250 advert that looks extremely good for above content adverts. The 728x90 advert has always been too big to place above content. 600x250 might be the right size for alot of?bloggers.

As you can see, Media.net has basically matched Adsense but also gone above and beyond in what they offer to publishers. Exclusivity, freedom and diversification.

Pros To Media.net

High Earnings

Although the information Media.net give to users is not much, they do give you the RPM of your website which after one week, I have been averaging around $3. Compare that to Google that was $1.50, Media.net has doubled that.

Nice Looking Adverts

When I saw the ad layouts for Media.net adverts, I was really impressed. The adverts don't look like adverts which is exactly what publishers want. This in turn will help to increase clicks and revenue.

Great Support

With each and every publisher having a dedicated mentor to help them, whenever you get in trouble no matter what the problem is, your mentor will be able to help you. For one thing, it is?definitely?better than attempting to search the net and hope for the best to stumble onto a good article!

Simple User Interface

I think it is important to mention the UI of Media.net since you may find yourself spending alot of time on it. The UI is similar to Google Adsense in the way that before you have used the program, you know how to use it. It is extremely easy to use which is great for people starting up with Media.net.

Cons to Media.net

Not Enough Statistics?

The only statistics Media.net supplies are:

  • Impressions
  • RPM
  • Estimated earnings

That is it. There are no CPC, CTR or anything else of the sort you can look at. This is a problem because you won't know how to improve your advert to gain more clicks.

Payments in Dollars

Another problem Media.net faces is with going global. It is great for Americans. However, for people like me from England or any other country with a?different?currency, we don't want our earnings in dollars. The result of this means that when it comes to converting my earnings back to British sterling, I will lose a few dollars due to the cost of exchanging money.

Why You Should Use Media.net

After this review and experience, I really think bloggers, that have used Adsense, should give Media.net a go. My main reason for this is the impressions. When my website was gaining roughly 1,000 views a day, my Adsense account would only get around 500-700 ad views because of ad blockers etc. When I switched to Media.net adverts, I was gaining near exactly the same amount of actual?impressions?being 1,000. This was a real shock because that means Media.net adverts are already at a 30-50% advantage to Adsense. I don't know why, but, Media.net adverts are displayed more times than Adsense on the same website.

After reading this, what do you think about Media.net? Will you be trying them? I would be interested to hear people's experiences with them and how it compares to Adsense.

Digitalization: The Start Of A New Era In The Music Industry

Adnan Sami, a Pakistan born singer, recently shared his thoughts about the introduction of the digitalization techniques in music industry. Sami shared his views at Nokia Music Connects 4. He told media about his personal opinion on the digitalization of the industry, and threw some light as to how he managed to get along with the new technology.

Sami admitted the fact that he had to face initial problems in connection to handling and managing the new technology. He also let people know about his first encounter with the new technology in the music industry. It was at a concert in South Africa where Sami first came to terms with the digitalization of music.

The fans seem to enjoy the so-called newer version of music, and I was overwhelmed with the response, said Sami. Digitalization of music industry has several negative aspects from the point of view of an artist. Privacy issues, loss or low revenue for the artist and the file sharing hindrances can prove to be the major setback of the mentioned technology. Sami was, however, quite pleased with these latest trends in music.

It is a sparkling fact that digitalization can result in fewer sales of the musical album, but in turn, the artist can enjoy overnight success. To achieve fame, you have to put something on the line, and when it comes to musical industry, a single song getting hits on social media can fetch you overnight fame and recognition.

Sami admits the fact that the number of sales of his recent album was not up to the desired mark, but he got immediate response over the social media about the songs of the album. Not just Sami, but also almost every singer needs to learn the art of dealing with the digital era of music.

The rest of the world is following a similar pattern of music, which has been appreciated at all levels. It has become easier for people to listen to their favorite songs. Though, an artist has to suffer financially, but in the long-run, recognition earned by means of digitalization of music can be ideal. Listeners do not have to face hindrances caused by musical companies, promotion brands etc, as listening to the favorite music these days has become as easy as pie.

No more waiting for the store owner to get the required music for you, as you can listen to your desired songs over the internet without any issue. Digitalization has changed the whole process of the musical industry. Owing to the new technology, the development of the singer has become a piece of cake these days.

Sami is of the view that technology has always helped the emerging talent, and this digitalization of the industry will definitely pave way for several singing sensations making a name on the world stage. He also added that the latest technology helps a singer to showcase all the talent he/she possess, which can be a great learning experience for everyone associated with the music industry.
